Guest guest
Rachael, You are right! Eating healthy/organic can definitely be expensive! We are having the same issues. Wish I could buy all organic, but I pick and choose now based on which things have higher concentrations of pesticides. I carry a list around with me: (see http://www.foodnews.org/walletguide.php) My 17 month old son does fine with ground flax seeds; I usually put them in a smoothie for him, or bake them into muffins. I do use flax oil too, but I only use a teaspoon at a time for him. Other sources of Omega 3s are enhanced Silk, walnuts (or walnut butter), tahini, canola oil, pumpkin seeds, beans, tofu, dark leafy greens, avocados...we just try to get a good variety of those things. I also take a DHA supplement that I buy on veganessentials.com; but it is pricey and once we are done nursing I doubt I will keep it up. In terms of budget, I try to cook a few super cheap meals each week--a big pot of soup, beans and rice with greens, baked potatoes with broccoli and nutritional yeast " cheese " topping. I find that if I plan a few of these each week, it's easier to stay within my grocery budget. But even still...I have gone over my grocery budget for the past 3 weeks...sigh. I try to buy most things in bulk now, and I (usually) avoid all convenience foods. And I use coupons, which I never thought I would do. My local coop sends out coupons each month, and there are several for things that I always buy. I also got a crock pot this year, and it usually makes enough for 2 meals, so we freeze the extra and use later in the month. Not sure if any of this is helpful, but just know you aren't alone in your frustration! Guest guest
I have two questions for you. First, why is everyone using flax seeds? I've been a vegetarian for about 18 years but I've never used any suplements or things like that and am curious about it. Second, have any great crock-pot recipes you care to share? Always looking for a way to make dinner time easier! Thanks. -Lisa austinvegan <austinvegan wrote: Rachael, You are right! Eating healthy/organic can definitely be expensive! Guest guest
For Omega's (3-6-9) which aren't found in a lot of vegetarian foods. These are the 'good' fats that our body needs. Flax is a good vegetarian source. Renee --- Lisa <starfirefive wrote: > I have two questions for you. First, why is > everyone using flax seeds? Guest guest
Flax is the best vegetarian source of omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential to have in your diet. There are other vegetarian sources (soy, canola, almonds?, etc) but none are as high in it as flax is. I don't really consider flax to be a supplement. I consider it to be a part of my diet. -- In , Lisa <starfirefive> wrote: why is everyone using flax seeds?
