Hi,

Does anyone have any ideas about how a vegan child can still go Trick

or Treating on

Halloween?? Its too much fun and I don't want my daughter to miss

out, but she won't be

able to eat 99% of what she gets. My husband and I came up with the

idea of trading in her

candy for $$. We would give her probably 50 cents for each piece and

then she would be

able to pick something out at the toy store. Any other ideas??

You might consider sending the unwanted candy to Katrina or Rita victims; by

the end of October it shouldn't be too hot to mail chocolate or other

meltables to MS or LA. There are free food distribution points set up in

damaged schools and churches in some of the ruined areas of MS where anyone

can come in and get what they need. They won't be recovered before

Halloween. Here are links about needs along the coast:

Hi Mandy,

For Halloween we always buy vegan treats to hand out. And we make sure

there is extra for our kids. We usually have them come back to the house

several times to unload their bags. After I carefully go through the bags,

we keep what is vegan then I recycle the " bad " stuff to the other treaters

who come to our door.

I like the money idea though. I remember as a child we use to get pennies

along with some candy in our treat bags.

Donate the candy to a kids home/shelter or food bank and make sure

your junk food cabinet is stocked with things your daughter likes.

Last year my son (5 at the time) went trick - or - treating to collect

food for the local food pantry. We volunteer there anyway, and he he

loves to help. We passed out postcards to the neighbors about a week

before Halloween explaining what he would be doing, and asked for them

to offer a non-perishable food item rather than candy for him to

collect. It was a huge hit!

We had borrowed a jogging stroller from a neighbor (good thing, as he

collected almost 90 pounds of food!). We had some people waiting for

him with a full bag to donate, and he loved all the positive comments

-- it was more fun and more rewarding than regular trick-or-treats, and

he is looking forward to doing it again this year.

He did get some people giving him candy anyway, and we just dropped

those into a neighbor's candy dish (one of those " please take one "

things that was out on the porch -- and empty by the time we got to

it). If you plan to pass out candy when you get home, you could use it

for that, too.

So as to not miss out on a little something for himself, ds and I went

shopping for a nice big bar of vegan dark chocolate that he enjoyed

some of when he got home from his night out of collecting. He gradually

broke off pieces for a week or so after Halloween, and then we were

done with it.

Hi Mandy,

We are going to buy vegan candy for our daughter and basically trade baskets. We

will probably donate the leftover candy.

I just noticed a list of vegan candy for Halloween in the latest Vegetarian

Times magazine, I believe the list came from vegfamily.com. I knew of a mom of

a diabetic child that bought approved candy and distributed it to the houses

where they would be going. She may have even put it in it's own bag and of

course talked to the parent first. I think the child was younger and there

probably wasn't that many houses. I like your idea too though!

Our tradition is that the kids collect candy as other kids do. Then we

have a good Halloween witch (who visits at midnight as Nov 1 is All Saint's

Day) and takes all the candy, leaving a gift in return - a

toy/outfit/whatever. My DH and I go through the candy after the girls are

in bed, remove the non vegan stuff which I leave at my work. We put some

of the vegan stuff back in their buckets along with the gift and it is at

the doorstep the next day - left by the good witch. The kids love it!!

AWESOME!! This is what I have been doing, more or less, depending on his age

and the situation. However the whole idea of the good witch/All Saint's is

so great. Hope you don't mind but I am stealing this one for sure! THANKS.
