Guest guest
I just spent some time looking over the lunch ideas from the Vegan Lunch Box. That is so great. So many ideas I loved it. I still have to look over the other links that were shared with me and seeing all the wonderful possibilities I am feeling better about being able to feed my son. This is my problem and I am hoping that some of you here can give me some ideas on how to approach this. I know there are a lot of meat alternatives, such as veggie dogs, veggie burgers and things like that. I'm not sure on how they taste and are they not that bad that your kids will eat them? Are there certain brands that you find better then others? This weekend while at the grocery store I asked Austin if he wanted to try some of the Veggie burgers and he made this face like " Your kidding right? " . So that I can prepare more of a selection of foods for him I was hoping to be able to use some of the meat alternatives but he seems leary to try them. Did anyone have this problem? I'm not sure if I should MAKE him try them or just offer them with an explination and a plea to at least TRY it. Roberta
Guest guest
I saw your comment on Vegan Lunch Box. How cool is that site? I love that little Shmoo made his whole lunch yesterday. Boca Burgers remind me of Mc(you-know-who) burgers, so if your son liked those, you might want to start there. Its really all in the toppings, if you ask me. Track down some TVP (textured vegetable protein). It comes dry, then you rehydrate it with vegetable stock, water, or boiling hot canned soup. It is a good substitute for ground b--f in things like tacos, chili, and sloppy joes. Yves bologna is pretty good in the kid pleasing catagory. One thing... watch out for all the pre-packaged processed stuff. Most of it is way too high in sodium and preservatives, and really shouldn't be a daily thing. Guest guest
Try not to get too dependant on highly processed foods like these (which unfortunately my family is...) but they are good in a pinch. I would recomend you start slow. Try making sloppy joes or tacos with veggie crumble (to replace hamburger). Morning Star Farms is one company that makes it. Or if he likes pasta with meatballs, I recomend Nates meatless meatballs (you might have to go to a natural food store for this one). My kids like Yves products a lot (hotdogs, veggie slices, soysage). DONT get tofu dogs - they are so gross! Also, with veggie burgers there are two kinds. The ones that look like fast food meat burgers (which I LOVE - Boca is a good example) and the ones with lots of pieces of veggies, mushrooms, etc visable in them (which I hate but my husband loves). Also, I highly recomend trying seitan. Its great in stir fry or with vegetarian gravy, mashed potatoes, and brocolli (mmmmmm - I'm making myself hungry!!!). Also remember there are tons of varieties of beans that you can do so much with (soup, stir fry, burritos, red beans with rice) and lentils (indian food - yum yum). Are there any vegetarian restaraunts in your area? Sometimes its nice to try new (and scary?) things in a setting where the chef knows how to make it taste good (seitan, tofu, tempeh) before trying to cook with it yourself and not knowing if it came out the way it should. , ~ Roberta ~ <rradunderhill@e...> wrote: > I know there are a lot of meat alternatives, such as veggie dogs, veggie burgers and things like that. Guest guest
Some products that my son's friend's eat and don't realize are vegetarian are the Morningstar Farm mini corn dogs, regular corn dogs, and chik'n nuggets. My non-veg boyfriend loves the Boca crumbles (texture is more " real " than the Morningstar Farm). I make tacos and stuffed peppers with them all the time. My son (who is 5) has never had meat and he will not touch anything with the crumbles in it. My bf also LOVES the Morningstar Farm sausage patties -- we do not like the Boca Sausage. I like the M.F. buffalo wings -- they are a little spicy; I can't remember how old you said your son is. I also like the M.F. herb roasted chik patties (they are not breaded). My bf and I also really like the Gardenburger Flame Grilled burgers. As far as lunch " meats " go, I really like the Tofurkey slices (smoked peppered ones the best), but HATE the Tofurkey roast. I do not like the Yves stuff, but had them at a vegetarian restaurant and the " meats " and vegan cheese were cooked on a grill and the sandwich was delicious. I can't wait to go back! Non-veg bf also loved that and he wouldn't touch the lunch " meat " stuff before. Some stuff is WAY better than others.
