Guest guest
Bought in Whole Foods Market made by Galaxy Nutritional Foods it is called " Vegan " Dairy free, Casein free comes in a 224g block in a few flavors. ***I don't care for it, although I think I will be able to tolerate it in burritos or tofu scramble. I wonder what the omni husband will say about it. I have not tried to melt it or cook with it. Doodle asked for cheese this morning, but I'm trying to transition from an always vegetarian to a mostly vegan household. I thought, well, if I give him the nasty vegan cheese, maybe he will get over cheese completely and I'm off the hook on the cheese issue. So I gave him a small slice, and his eyes lit up and he proclaimed, " IT IS DELICIOUS!!! " He ate four more slices before breakfast. Guest guest
Nikki, I didn't find Follow Your Heart vegan cheese at the Kentlands WFM either, but I did find at My Organic Market in Rockville. Several people on this group have endorsed the product, so I gave it a try and picked up 2 different kinds (I think they were cheddar and Montery Jack flavored). My hopes were high, but I was disappointed. I didn't like either of them. But maybe you will. Seems like a lot of people do. That was my last great hope for vegan cheese. I'm going to give the people in the lab coats a couple more years to work on it. Until then I'm just doing without cheese. - Alan , " lilmunkydunk " <lilmunkydunk@a...> wrote: > > Thanks, Carol. Guest guest
FWIW, Alan, I think the mozzarella flavor FYH cheese is way better than the cheddar or Monterey Jack. Maybe you could give that one a try before you give up? Guest guest
Tofutti makes a vegan cheese - I've found 3 flavors: American, Mozzarella and Roasted Garlic. I found the Amercian at Trader Joe's and the other two at a health food store in Tempe, AZ. Guest guest
Alan, Thanks for the response. I too found it at Mom's, but haven't opened the packages yet. I bought all three kinds. I'll give my critique of the mozzerlla (which I've heard the best things about) once I try it. Ha ha, I almost bought some vegetarian rennet I saw there at Mom's, thinking that I could put on my on lab coat (from my cosmetics sales days) and try to formulate my own cheese. As if!! Anyway, my expectations are pretty low, but I'll report. Guest guest
Before giving up, try the mozarella flavor. I tried the others and was totally turned off, but the mozarella in my opinion is great!!!!! - " Alan " <soy_decaf_latte Friday, November 04, 2005 7:11 PM Re: Vegan Cheese my toddler loves > Nikki, > > I didn't find Follow Your Heart vegan cheese at the Kentlands WFM > either, but I did find at My Organic Market in Rockville. > > Several people on this group have endorsed the product, so I gave it a > try and picked up 2 different kinds (I think they were cheddar and > Montery Jack flavored). Guest guest
My family didn't care for this brand (FYH). We only really liked (sort of)the presliced version out there (I think it is by Tofutti) but only " hidden " in things like burritos, not on a sandwich. We like VeganRella much more. But when Tree of Life purchased it, they changed the formula and it became kind of slimy and chalky at the same time. During this time I read a lot of posts from people who hated it. It was taken off the market for some time. Now it is back with a new formulation and we LOVE it!! It tastes great - we actually eat it sliced off the block. My toddler asks for it as a snack. And, it melts, which makes dear hubby very happy! We have made grilled cheese sandwiches, quesadillas, pizza and pasta with it. I have also melted it in the microwave and poured it over rice and veggies. My toddler uses it as a dip for her broccoli. Con - it does not contain any vitamin B12 like the Road's End chreese mixes. So, I mix in some nutritional yeast if I make a sauce with it or melt it. Also, be careful, the Almondrella and HempRella are not vegan. Well, that was a long post. Just thought you may want to try it since it has a new taste. My HFS carries it but I haven't seen it at WF. Guest guest
We didn't like the Follow Your Heart cheese either. I kept hearing good things about it, and kept buying it in all it's different flavors, and it kept being gross. Kind of oily and velveeta-ish. VeganRella is awesome! When we first tried it 4 years ago or so, I thought it was horrible, but I guess they've changed it since then, because the last year or so we started using it again and it was delicious. We only use the mozzerella, which isn't a strong-tasting ( " cheese " taste/smell is kinda weird when you know it's not from cheese), but it's good on everything we've tried, like pizza, chili pie, chili dogs, mexican food, grilled cheese sandwhiches, etc... Sometimes the kids just want a chunk of it cold. We don't like to use it all the time, since there's really no nutritional value, but we keep a block or two of it in the fridge all the time just in case. And when I use it I grate it with the really fine side of the grater so it melts faster and goes farther. I'd really recommend it if you're having trouble finding a vegan cheese product you like.
