Guest guest
I had raw carob once and really like it. The roasted carob is too strong for me, taste wise. So I'm ordering some raw carob from True Foods. Diana of Dewberry Hill CAROB Carob (Certaonia siliqua) is sometimes known as 'St John's bread'. This is due to the belief that the locusts that John the Baptist ate while in the desert were from the carob tree. Carob is of the legume family and is grown in the Mediterranean area, where it is used as stock feed. The tree can grow to nine metres, is drought resistant and provides good shade. The large thick brown pods, which contain seeds have a 50 per cent sugar content and although they may be eaten fresh are mostly dried. The sweet pulp makes carob very popular as an alternative to chocolate and coffee, and it is often sold in health food stores as roasted ground beans in powered form. It is mainly used in sweets and desserts and has a particular affinity with honey. Carob contains no theobromine, caffeine or other stimulants. Gourmet Harvest vote. - Register online to vote today! Guest guest
Does anyone use carob in place of chocolate? My youngest, age 5, is incredibly affected by chocolate. It causes him to wake up several times during the night. One or two chocolate chips is all it takes. Being vegan, we already stick to dark chocolate but that doesn't seem to make a difference. So does anyone use carob, have a favorite brand of carob (chips or powder) or any great carob recipes? Thanks Katie http://frugalveggiemama.blogspot.com FareChase - Search multiple travel sites in one click.
Guest guest
I use carob in place of chocolate all the time . It goes over well with the children. No one seems to notice and I never say a word. I make vegan food for a day school. Guest guest
I used to use carob powder a lot because chocolate made my daughter evil when she was little. Thank goodness she grew out of that! Jacqueline C. > > Katie Mangan <kmangan33 > 2005/11/07 Mon AM 09:00:10 EST > > carob > > Does anyone use carob in place of chocolate? Guest guest
You could probably use carob chips just like chocolate chips. I personally didn't like the brand I bought. I'm a dark chocolate addict! My son doesn't react like that to chocolate chips, but boy does ice cream give him a boost (he's lacto-ova; I'm vegan), which is actually good...less dairy for him! , Katie Mangan <kmangan33> wrote: > > Does anyone use carob in place of chocolate? Guest guest
Katie, Jennifer of the veganlunchbox blog had a recipe up for a while for pumpkin muffins with carob chips, and I've made them several times. Yummy! My husband hates the carob chips by themselves, but he loves these muffins.. So does my 18-month-old son. So, maybe add some to your regular banana breads, muffins etc and see what you think!. I get my carob ships in bulk from our local coop. Amy On Tuesday, November 8, 2005, at 06:14 PM, wrote: > carob > > Does anyone use carob in place of chocolate? Guest guest
Thanks for the idea Amy. I love Jennifer's blog, I'll check that recipe out. Being a chocolate freak, I've always tasted carob chips and turned my nose up but I think you may be onto something when you mention how your hubby likes the carob chips within recipes but not alone. I'm going to give it a try. Guest guest
I use the grain-sweetened carob chips by Sunspire. The back of the package has 2 great recipes for a carob pie that uses tofu and another for carob coconut bars. My children and company love both desserts. Guest guest
Jacqueline, Evil would be a good description of my son after a bite or two of chocolate!
