Veg in Hawaii

<<I am travelling to Hawaii for two weeks and I have no idea how difficult it

will be for a vegetarian there. Does anyone who has been to Hawaii have advice

or recommendations?>>

It's been a while, so I can't remember exact names or locations, but I found it

was actually pretty easy over there. There are a lot of Asian restaurants,

which really helps. There's also a funky, well-known, hippie-type place on Maui

that has veggie burgers and the like, and is in the VRG's book about restaurants

by state (not handy at the moment, so I can't tell you myself).

Presumably you'll be staying in a hotel, so contact them in advance to find out

what they know about their own restaurants and their local area. But there are

so many Asian tourists in Hawai'i that you shouldn't have a problem. Just

remember that almost everything has to be shipped in, so you might want to bring

a few staples (soy milk, say) to keep in your hotel room if you don't want to

pay really high prices for them locally.

Vegetarian Times recently named either Honolulu or Waikiki (I'm sorry I

cannot remember which) as one of the greenest cities in the US. There

are supposedly plenty of vegetarian eats. There is a vegetarian

healthy fast food chain (ahh, heavan), and also the country's largest

ALL VEGETARIAN GROCERY STORE!!! I want to move there! Who's with me??

Where exactly will you be going? I have a sister in Honolulu and I know it's

very easy to be veg there.

Waikiki is right next to Honolulu, so it's kinda the same thing. Unfortunately,

it's very expensive to live there. My brother-in-law invited us to move there,

but then he told me that there are people there who have no choice but to work 2

or 3 jobs just to make ends meet. So I guess if we just wanted to live on the

beach and eat coconuts.....

How lucky that you have someone to visit in Hawaii!

Unfortunately, the cost of living isn't much higher than where we

live. I would rather live paycheck to paycheck in paradise than

paycheck to paycheck in the concrete jungle. The only thing is all

those pig roasts in Hawaii would be hard to take. At least here when

friends invite you to a " luau " it just means that they will be

wearing floral print shirts and drinking lots of rum!

Hmmmm, well, those are good points. Keep in mind, though, that Honolulu is

pretty crowded and noisy and full of traffic snarls as well....and then there's

the occasional tsunami alert. But I guess all the palm tree-lined beaches that

surround it sort of make up for it. :) It's kinda funny....the last time my

sister came to visit, she kept talking about how much she misses the beauty here

in WI, and how she thinks we live in 'God's Country.' I guess it's all in how

you look at it, right?

BTW, I never did see any pig roasts while I was out there...maybe they're easier

to avoid than you think? I dunno. Good luck with your 'quest!'
