Guest guest
hello i am new to this group. i was trying to find out things my son could eat that maybe i hadnt heard of. many people are telling me to give him different vitamins and other suppliments since he's become a veg. he still eats fish, eggs and cheese the main thing he cut out all meat. he was never a big meat eater, but he doesnt eat any type of meat at all. he is starting to have stomach aches and some people are saying it may be to his diet and his body is shocked. he's been doing this since august. i myself am not on this diet, but trying to help him through this process. this has been his own decision to do this. he is 10years old. do you think i should see a nutritionist who specializes in vegetarian diets? or what other suppliments do he need instead of multivitamins. what is he really losing by not eating meat? protein? i heard there is plent in fish?? is this true?? can you give me some insite. thank you FareChase - Search multiple travel sites in one click. Guest guest
I have never heard of stomach problems associated with giving up meat. In fact my mom's surgeon recommended as close to a vegan diet as possible in order to avoid colon cancer. It could be that he has increased his dairy intake to compensate for the meat that he no longer has in his diet. This may be causing him problems if he is lactose intolerant. There are also people that are sensitive to soy so if you have substituted " fake meat " for the real thing that could happen. I would just take note of what he has eaten when he has had tummy troubles and see if you can track it down that way. Not eating meat would not cause this though. Also, he can get plenty of protein on a vegetarian diet by eating beans, legumes, tofu, nuts and seeds and so on. Jacqueline C. Guest guest
well he shouldn't be eating fish. People get mercury posioning from eating more than (well depending on the fish) as little as 4-6 oz of fish a week. We can get omegas from safer vegetarian sources there is no reason anyone should eat fish. He should eat at least five servings of whole grains such as bread, rice, pasta, cereal, corn, barley, bagels and tortillas. He should eat three servings of vegetables 1 cup raw or 1/2 cup cooked equals a serving and eat a healthy variety of different colors of vegetables (like spinach, broccoli, eggplant, squash, carrots, etc). He should eat three servings of fruit a day (not counting juice as it lacks the needed fiber of whole fruit) strawberries, bananas, grapes, apples, etc. And two servings of legumes for protein - this includes fake meats, tofu, seitan, chickpeas/hummus, beans, etc. My daughter's doctor has me include an additional 3 servings of milk substitutes - I guess for calcium. She normally drinks 1-2 12 oz servings of chocolate soy milk and 1-2 4oz cups of soy yogurt. Its a dietary guideline that we follow but I'm not sure is really necessary. Guest guest
I have to agree with Renee on this one. Fish is not as good for you as pop culture claims. Being that a fish is an animal, its flesh IS meat. Recently there was a study conducted in Canada on toxic chemicals carried within them. As with virtually the whole planet, the results indicated that Canadians are contaminated. The most contaminated participant in the study was not someone from a me to area, rather it was a chef from an isolated northern Indian reservation. His mercury levels were through the roof. I have a friend that is from that same reservation, they are known for eating a lot of fish, Do the math, the answer is simple. Last year my daughter wanted to be a vegetarian, and i supported her. Unfortunately, she failed as the rest of the family was eating meat around her. We are now all vegan, except dad, who is not always here anyway. I have had to do a lot of research, here are some sources that have helped me. I wish you luck. A dietitian may be a good idea, i know others who have used them. ~Shelly http://www.vegetarianbaby.com/ http://www.pcrm.org/ www.goveg.net www.peta.com Renee Carroll <renecarol25 wrote: well he shouldn't be eating fish. Guest guest
Hello, Tehrifah!! Welcome to our group! You must be very proud to have such a wise and contientious son!! Wow!! He is also very lucky to have such a supportive and understanding mother. People will always have their two cents to add to how you are raising your kids in all areas or parenting, whether you are too strict, too permissive, you give him too much junk food, you are not giving him enough sweets, etc. People will always have something to say. The best you can do is do your research and know in your heart that you are doing the right thing. Many of us are at different levels of vegetarianism in this site. Some eat eggs and dairy, others are strict vegan, and yet others only eat raw vegan foods. For those of us who do not consume any animal products whatsoever, we have to keep an eye on our amino acids, or proteins, because whereas proteins derived from animals are complete vegetable proteins are not. You can still get all your complete protein through vegetable sources, but you have to eat the right variety and combination of foods to do so. In addition, we also have to supplement our vitamin B complex intake, especially B- 12. I have also found that I have to take other suplements for our joints, such as glucosamine. Unless you eat vegan, you really have nothing to worry about. Regarding your son's stomach pains, during what part of the day does it happen? I often find that my daughters' stomachs hurt when they are either nervous or stress, but more often than ever is when they have to go to the bathroom. Even when they don't feel like pooping, when they complain of stomach pain I send them to sit on the toilet for a few minutes and believe it or not they always had to go. Also, during our first two weeks of eating vegan foods, we went through a sort of natural cleansing process and were eliminating several times per day. Make sure your son gets enough fiber. Other than that you can check with your regular pediatrician if symptoms persist. Remember that symptoms can also be of emotional nature. Hope that helps. Once again, welcome to our group and we look forward to having you join us in our discussions!! Guest guest
Soy and Hemp are both complete sources of protein. I believe there are other plant based sources of complete proteins as well. I don't think people who eat varied diets need to worry about complementing proteins.. Guest guest
Hi Tehrifah, Welcome to the group, and I second the congratulations for having such a compassionate child. I also commend you for wanting to educate yourself on his behalf. I think that through a little research (books are an ideal source) you will find that it is unnecessary for your son to continue to eat fish. In these early stages of your son's journey, I wouldn't worry too much about labels. If he eats fish and calls himself a vegetarian, so be it. Labels can identify us as unique, but they can also alienate us and set us up for failure. I call myself vegan, but I don't fall apart if my bread contains honey. Does that make me a hypocrite? Some may say so, but I know in my heart I am a compassionate and good person, and I'll be damned if I let someone chastise me for not fitting their perfect idea of veganism. I encourage you to check out plenty of vegetarian/vegan/animal liberation sources to better understand your son's feelings and plight. Maybe you will even choose to join him, as some other parents within this group have done. These are the nutritional staples in this vegetarian household (the ones with ** are included with each meal: **a variety of whole (not instant) grains: (millet, quinoa, steel cut oats, long grain brown rice, kamut, bulgar wheat, etc. *whole grain pastas *whole grain breads and crackers and chips *tofu **a variety of legumes/beans **flax seeds (to be used ground) ^and, or^ **flax seed oil **wheat germ **wheat germ oil (vitamin E; most people are deficient) *nuts *nut butters *seeds *tahini *soy milk *soy yogurt **nutritional yeast **fruits **vegetables My son also takes a multi-vitamin, but that is regardless of his being vegetarian. If your son does not wish to yet become vegan, and you don't chose to lead him in that direction, dairy protein consumed in the same meal as whole grains will give him complete protein. If you are not really knowledgeable about nutritional in general, or if you really do feel uninformed about a vegetarian diet, I would say consulting a nutritionist is a great idea. Best wishes to you, and I hope you find this group helpful. Nikki , Renee Carroll <renecarol25> wrote: > > Soy and Hemp are both complete sources of protein.
