Guest guest
I started being stricter with my diet as of Thursday morning. I'm using the weight watchers pure points diet and have been keeping a food diary. So far its going ok. I'm 5'6 " and weigh 11st. I should really go and look this up to see how much i should lose. I guess i'll do that in a bit. The funny thing is, my " top half " is a size 12/14 and my " bottom half " is a size 14/16. (uk sizes) so i'm all out of balance, or pear shaped as they say. I want to try and even things up a bit I also have some health probs that i think will improve if i do this (arthritis and irritable bowel syndrome - both triggered by stress and diet i believe). Mind you, i've never eaten unhealthily really, i just eat too much too often! I'm off to the cinema later so it'll be a challenge to avoid the nachos and ice cream but i'm sure i can do it. " Just a diet coke for me please " Have any of you started dieting yet or are you considering your options - it took me a while to get round to actually starting. Guest guest
I started my so-called regime just after New Year. I've lost half a kilo - but that was almost straight away and there it has stuck. Obviously I'm not doing enough - so easy to be careless. With me, the best thing to do is to count calories (I know, I know, but I'm an oldfashioned girl and that's the way my mind goes!) and that means measuring and weighing everything - I'm starting that today ;=) My best diet tip relates exactly and works for me. I start a diet with a new cookbook (or untried recipes out of old cookbooks) - and I make special meals for myself in order to try out the new rcipes. That way, I measure, weigh and consider every ingredient carefully. Needless to say, the cookbook has to be vegetarian and have well-balanced meals with little fat and no sugar ;=) - and I obviously eat smaller portions than usual. And I drink buckets of water. Every meal therefore becomes an adventure rather than a 'diet' - and if I'm hungry I can have a cup of tea and plan my next meal ;=) The proof of this pudding, however, will come in not the eating but the slimming. If I don't lost weight, then you'll all know that the recipes were just too darned good this time! Maybe I should get recommendations for really baaaaaad recipes! ;=) best, pat -- PAT (In London, Ontario) Email List: townhounds- (townhounds/) Personal Email: SANTBROWN Personal Webpage: http://www.angelfire.com/art/pendragon/ ---------- * " Until he extends the circle of compassion to all living things, man will not himself find peace. Guest guest
Laura: Glad to hear about your diet. I'm also glad some people are beginning to talk about a program to begin shiming down in a healthy way--one that leads to greater " wellness. " I believe that I told everyone that my first was to totally renounce alcohol, cigarettes, drugs, simple sugar(s), and refined carbohydrates; as well as animal protein, fats and oils and also vegetable fats and oils contained in nuts and seeds, olives, avocadoes, and soy products; No coffee or salt either. The aforementioned simple rule virtually eliminates a number of problem sources of calories--especially those contained in sugar, flour and fat--and leaves me to get my calories from high fiber, foods with plenty of vitamins and minerals. I don't have to worry about weighing or measuring how much I eat, what I eat or when. I just don't eat any of those things, and I can eat all I want of anything else, any time I want, as much as I want. Notice that this is not a diet, it is a lifestyle change! I weighed 172 pounds when I started this lifestyle on January 6, 2003. I feel better and I think I have lost weight, but I only weigh myself once a month. That way I can go ahead and live my life without getting compulsive about my weight. I'll let you know how much I've lost on February 6. Guest guest
Ron, it sounds like you are well on your way to a healthy lifestyle with that diet and exercise - fantastic, well done. I went for a walk today too, up a mountain. it wasn't that far because its freezing. But far enough to get some exercise and fresh air, just what i needed! And of course i could admire the lovely views. Keep it up, Laura (uk) , Ron McClure <rlmftw> wrote: > Laura: > > Glad to hear about your diet. That means you are actually at the top edge of your normal weight range for your height. Ho old are you? (If you don't mind my asking) >I also have some health probs that i think will improve if i do this >(arthritis and irritable bowel syndrome - both triggered by stress >and diet i believe). Mind you, i've never eaten unhealthily really, >i just eat too much too often! You are only slightly obese, and that is a VERY GOOD thing! I suggest you might want to add swimming and walking as exercise if you have arthritis. Is the arthritis in the upper half of your body? Is it osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis? One needs to be extremely gentle with damaged joints but to keep them moving and to give them as much support as possible from the surrounding muscles is important. When I am doing well, I eat about 1400 calories per day and work very hard to make it high protein and low carbohydrate. I eat a lot of vegetables and soy products, dairy very sparingly and fruit very sparingly--but only because I don't care for fruit that much. I take a daily vitamin for seniors (I'm 53 years old) and along with it a cheap, Wal-mart time-release B12. Someone here mentioned Ornish. I haven't read him in years. I may revisit his book now that I have been reminded that it's out there. For exercise I belly dance. I've been dancing for about 3 years. I started on the morning of my 50th birthday. I am planning to dance through the second half-century of my life. My troupe has a website http://bohemiantribal.tripod.com it's very preliminary and none of the links work yet, but I am the second dancer from the right. ------ Please visit my website: http://members.cox.net/sbcogan Also, check out an excerpt of " Jubilee, " which will be published in the next few months: http://members.cox.net/sbcogan/writing.html

At my heaviest i was 11st 7lb but if you look at my upper body you wouldn't believe i was that heavy. Its all on my hips and thighs. I'd say though for me its not so much about losing weight (as muscle is heavier than fat) as getting rid of fat and slimming down. My measurements are something like 34, 29, 43. At uni i heard people saying " she's quite nice looking but she's got a huuge ass! " Nice, heh! For everyone else reading this its pretty boring so sorry! >I suggest you might want to add swimming and walking as exercise if >you have arthritis. Is the arthritis in the upper half of your >body? Is it osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis? One needs to be >extremely gentle with damaged joints but to keep them moving and to >give them as much support as possible from the surrounding muscles >is important. I enjoy walking and try to do some reguarly but i don't like swimming very much. I also have asthma which is affected by both exercise and cold temperatures - and thats were it gets more complicated. Its diagnosed as arthritis but not as a specific type. I have worked in rheumatology before so i believe it is either reactive arthritis (as a result of an illness of some kind) or sero-negative rheumatoid arthritis, but i'm not sure. It is difficult finding exercise i can do. I enjoy yoga but am not supposed to do it because i am hypermobile (double jointed). So i do it but am careful. I really enjoy aerobics but am not supposed to do it as it is high impact... and it goes on. What you wrote about your diet is very interesting. Its similar to what i want to achieve. My protein levels aren't that high at the moment but i try to keep the carbs down. They're the killer for me. The belly dancing sounds really cool. I liked the photo. I was thinking of taking it up but went for reflexology instead (i'm taking evening classes). Anyway, i've babbled on for long enough, thanks for the email, wishing you good health, Laura (uk)
