Some thoughts on exercise (posted 11/01/03)

Along with a healthy diet and a positive mental attitude, the

biggest weapon against fat is regular exercise. This doesn't have

to mean hours pounding the pavements or pumping iron at the gym –

even the gentlest of activities have benefits that go far beyond

weight loss.

When we up our activity levels, the body responds by releasing feel

good hormones, endorphins. These are responsible for the " high "

or " buzz " that many exercisers experience, even after the activity

has ceased. In addition, you will see improvements to your hair,

skin and nails and in the long term will be protecting your body

against many serious diseases. So, what are you waiting for? If

you're stuck for ideas, here are some simple suggestions:

• Hide the remote control so you have to get out of your seat

every time you want to change the channel. Every little helps…

• Think of chores as being work out opportunities and they

won't seem half as bad. Really put some effort into vacuuming,

polishing and scrubbing and burn around 250 calories an hour.

• Next time you're pushing a trolley around the supermarket,

look at it this way – in 30 minutes time you'll be around 120

calories better off!

• Waiting for the kettle to boil? Spend the time jogging on

the spot or doing a few stomach crunches.

• It can be difficult to find time to exercise when you're a

mum, but if you put the baby in a stroller and stride out for half

an hour, you'll get rid of about 90 calories.

• If you drive or take the bus to work, park further away or

get off a stop early. If it takes you 15 minutes to walk the rest

of the way, that adds up to 2 and a half hours (600 calories) a week.

• Running around with your children may not seem like formal

exercise, but if it makes you feel a bit sweaty or breathless, you

can bet your bottom dollar that its doing you some good!

• Use the weekend to go exploring. A long walk is one of the

best fat burners there is – just don't udo all the good work by

indulging in a 3 course pub meal afterwards!

I have to say i'm so guilty of not doing any exercise. I'm so tired

after work i find it really hard to find the energy. So these kind

of exercise tips suit me. Hoping to start doing aerobics and yoga

at home soon, when i get a moment!

I want to second what you say about exercise. Today I

got up at 7:30 a.m. and walked about a mile to get to

a local park here in Haltom City. I walked the hike

and bike trail along the river and then back through

the picnic and soccer fields to a residential street

that took me home--some 2 or 3 miles, I guess. A

comfortable walk like this gets my chronic arthritis

loosened up every day enough that I don't have aches

and pains for the rest of the day once I get back from

the walk. Such a walk in the cold is also very

invigorating and also good for the heart.

Arriving home, I steamed some vegetables to go on a

bed of fresh spinach and put pasta and tomato sauce on

top of that.

I'm off work today, so I parked the car and rode my

bicycle downtown Fort Worth. The trip is about five

miles and there are two fairly good hills on the

route. I'm checking mail, running errands and

stopping in at a new vegetarian restaurant just opened

in Ft. Worth. Hopefully I can meet some more

" practical vegans " there.

Allison:

Are you in Fort Worth? I think I'm the only " practically vegan "

person here! Are you in Texas?
