Guest guest
Hey Guys hi, Thank you for replying my thread ... It is not easy to be a vegetarian seeing that it seems I am the only one in my school ! Well I am currently in Chengdu, which is the 4th largest city in China and famous for its various delicious food. Yes it is the paradise for gourmets, but basically for the meat eater, not for vegetarians. Here we basically have no vegetarian food! Chinese meals are always famous for its rich oil and cooking in deep fire, and also in Sichuan cuisine the chillu peppers and spicy sauce are added in almost every dish. I don't consider that is the healthy way of eating. Well, it is especially hard for me to choose in my school. Nearly every dish is cooked with meat, or at least with lard. For instance, there are 4 kinds of noodles, and 3 contains meet and one contains no meat, but eggs. Only some pates , bread and cakes are ok. But I can't eat only them without any other thing. I need vegetables , badly. But if I want to eat vegetables without meat, I can only eat cold dishes. And they are used to putting a lot of chilli pepper powders and garlics in them, which I hate. Also the some vegetables can't be eaten raw, they need to be cooked. But when it comes to hot dishes, they always add meat . That is why I said my choice is limited. In winter when it is too cold, I might get diarrhoea eating too much cold dishes. Plus, I am going to travel in summer. And the places we are gonna visit lack vegetables. Vegetables there are carried from faraway city and they can be extremely expensive and not very fresh obviously. I have to eat meat them I am afraid, or I am gonna die them. Because without vegetables and if I only eat cookies , I will lack energy and vitamins. Since most of people are not vegetarians in China , people think you are odd if you are very peculiar with food. Also because of this reason, there are not many meat substitutes in China. At least I haven't seen any like Soy Delicious products. Yes sometimes we have to be cautious if the soup are broth. It is hard to avoid it at first. And I don't eat eggs too much, but I might not avoid it at all. And Diary products... I don't think I can give up milk and ice-creams... so unless in China I can drink some soy milk or eat some substitutes which have the same taste as milk and ice-creams......:-P Annie
Guest guest
Annie, You are an inspiration! Keep asking for vegetarian dishes. I know it is hard, but one day, you'll be out of school and have more choices. Can you get vitamin supplements for your travels? I just returned from Hawaii, and even there, believe it or not, there were restaurants where there was nothing vegetarian on the menu except french fries, and those were questionable. However, all that oil and high-fat meat *are* bad for you. > Well, it is especially hard for me to choose in my school. >Nearly every dish is cooked with meat, or at least with lard. When you can eat tofu, peanuts or legumes, then do. If those aren't available, eat eggs. If eggs aren't available eat fish and seafood. If seafood isn't available, eat meat. Lean meat in moderation isn't bad for you and if that is the only way to get protein, then you should go ahead and do it. You can hope that in the future your situation will change and you will be able to have more control over what you can eat and can become fully vegetarian if that is your wish. Eating a diet that has lots of vegetables, is low in fat and has balanced protein and complex carbohydrates is the first importance. Without a balanced diet you will have no energy and get sick easily. I'm a vegetarian and I think it's the best way to live, but in your situation I would look after my health first. When you are out of school you will be able to eat the way you want to! Good Luck! Guest guest
Thank you Susan, I think your advice is really good for me. I have been worried about having to eat meat, but now I think my health is the first. I might be able to cook my own vegetarian meal when I own my own apartment and cook myself.
