Guest guest
Hi Laura, Where in Wales do you live? It is one of our favourite places - we go there about once every couple of years to visit friends who live in Llangadog (between Llandovery and Llandeilo and very close to Bethlehem). We'd love to go again soon but I was recently made redundant so we have to watch our spending very closely Cheers, from Marie in Holland
Guest guest
Hi Marie, sorry to hear that you were made redundant. Have you had much luck with finding a new job yet? I hope that you find something good. I live in Cardiff, Whitchurch to be precise. Although i'm not welsh, i'm originally from Stevenage in Hertfordshire (about 30 miles north of london). It is a nice country but sometimes i feel welsh people can be a bit too patriotic - some people really hate the English! I haven't been to the places you mentioned but i have heard of them. I work in a specialist brain injury and we take people from all over Wales so i often work with clients from these places. Anyway, must go, i'm off to my health food shop to look for some vegan delights! Take care, Laura ----------- Take a look at my : My online diary is at: http://laurakate01.diaryland.com/ ----------- " A man can live and be healthy without killing animals for food; therefore, if he eats meat, he participates in taking animal life merely for the sake of his appetite. Guest guest
Hey Laura, Hope you and Marie don't mind if I join this conversation. ? Dh and I are hoping to move to your area of Wales with the next year!! (hopefully dh can get a job in Cardiff and we'll live in Rhondda?) We live in the northeastern part of the US now but 8 years ago we lived in Suffolk. I am American by dh is British American. I've been reading a book this week called " A walk through Wales " and the author basically feels the same as yourself. I wonder what kind of reaction dh and I will get!?!? Guest guest
Thanks for writing and explaining about the Welsh, Jon. I'm really looking forward to say "I live in Wales", and seeing Cardiff again more and more. I have been to Cardiff before, when we lived in Suffolk, but it was so long ago I don't remember much and things have probably changed a lot. The book "a walk through Wales" is a little dry at times for me (poss. because my knowledge of welsh history is poor atm) but overall an enjoyable relaxing read. I have all these pages marked to later find out what this or that is that the author talks about. The English gentleman walks from Cardiff in the south to Bangor in the north, mostly on footpaths (I'm so looking forward to walking in the countryside again). I definitely have to agree, travel books are never the same as being there - this book is 10 years old too. The author has helped me to understand and sympathize with the patriotism mostly through his talks with the Welsh in the book. One gets the feeling that the author really likes Wales and the Welsh. You will find Wales different to America, but as you lived in Suffolk you will find it easier to settle into the country. I have never been to Rhondda but I have heard it is quite a nice place. You shouldn’t have many problems with the locals, when Laura says Welsh being patriotic, it stems from the traditional Celts (Welsh, Scottish and Irish) not taking to the English too well to put it mildly, but some of my friends are English, so not everyone takes the rivalry too seriously.I haven’t read the book “A Walk Through Wales’ is it any good? I find books about places never give a 100% true image of the area, the only way to find out about an area is be there yourself I suppose. I love the Cardiff area, the city centre has pretty much everything you can ask for, shops, nightlife, gardens, restaurants, cinemas, etc. It has it all I think.Jon

Guest guest
Hi Laura, Thanks for your reply. I must say that in Wales I have never encountered any discrimination. When we visit our friends in Llangadog we actually rent a holiday cottage on the property of their next door neighbours. Our friends (from Redhill on the south coast) and their neighbours (from London) have all found moving to Wales to be an enriching experience and haven't encountered too much discrimination as adults. It has been more difficult for our friends' sons. The boys are now 19 and 16 but when they moved to Wales about 10 years ago they found it difficult to find acceptance at school and were taunted about being English. Our friends are very gentle and spiritual people and I am sure that their accepting approach to life has helped them to embrace the Welsh lifestyle and, conversely, to be accepted by the Welsh people. They run a 'mind, body spirit' mail order book club and have had absolutely no trouble keeping good staff (all local people) and the work atmosphere in the business is great - certainly no nationalism has ever reared its head there. Cheers for now from Marie PS - if you ever go to Bath you must try to visit Demuth's vegetarian restaurant (it's only tiny so booking would be wise). We had just about the best vegetarian meal I have ever eaten when we were there last year and they also have vegan choices. (No, I'm not in any way connected with the restaurant apart from as a very satisfied customer - this 'commercial' is totally unsollicited.)
