Guest guest
Well, things probably won't get less chaotic in my life anytime soon, so I decided to use Lent as my " excuse " and just jump on out there. I'm giving up all caffeine, effective Ash Wednesday (day after tomorrow). I'm also using Lent as my impetus to get off my vegetarian waffling attitude so, as of Wednesday, no meat of any kind for the next 40 days. I can do *anything* for that long -- right?! <lol> Paula J. Guest guest
Good grief, it's a good thing Lent is only 40 days, isn't it! *lol* Fortunately, not being of a religious nature, I don't feel I need to give up anything - but it is a wonderful excuse to do so ;=) Best of luck with it - the caffein might be harder than the me*t, ya know *lol* Can't understand why people find it difficult to do without meat, but a good cup of tea or coffee is a *must* now and then for me! So have you got a whole bunch of wonderful meat subs in, or are you going to do without those too??? Let us know how it goes along - I think there are other 'waffling' (waffling on Pancake Tuesday? ) vegetarians who would be grateful for your experience. As they say, You Go, Girl!!!! Guest guest
That is so funny... i have NEVER heard it called Pancake Tuesday before until this morning talking to my Canadian boyfriend. We call it Fat Tuesday. Now, here i've heard it TWICE today!! I am going to have a yummy, heavy creamy pasta dish today for my last feast. I am more spiritual than religious but have always given something up for Lent ) peace nikki So have you got a whole bunch of wonderful meat subs in, or are yougoing to do without those too??? Guest guest
I guess I get Pancake Tuesday from the Canadian part of my upbringing ;=) My mother, always more English than the English, called it Shrove Tuesday. I tend to refer to it as Fat Tuesday, not quite sure why that name and not another, but there you have it ;=) I think that it's a good idea to use any excuse you need to motivate yourselve towards your personal goal. Perhaps it may indeed be called Appropriation, if it's a motivation from a culture not your own, but I figure as long as it's done with respect it might not really matter in the long range plans of people and the world they live in together. In any case, respect is somehow the word I try to keep to the front of my head *lol* So, okay, tomorrow is someone's Lent for 40 days! I'll join any of you who want to deprive the themselves for a good cause!!! (Errr, that includes improving your health for the sake of your family).) And in case anyone worries about the ethics of all this (someone always will, of course, even if they are too well mannered to speak up), I plan to contribute per day to a fund that will later go to a charity/cause of my choice - which means animal welfare, environmental concerns and without a doubt civil rights (Amnesty International, for my favourite one). The rest of you, just save it up for cheesecake when you've lost the needed-to-be-lost weight ;=) Nothin wrong with cheesecake!!! Best love - and my admiration to those of you doing all this!!!!1 Pat ;=) / still in southwestern Ontario *lol* -- SANTBROWN townhounds/ vegetarianslimming/ HOMEPAGE: http://www.angelfire.com/art/pendragon/ ---------- * " There are too many idiots in this world. Guest guest
I know. Day 1 and I'm already ready to call it quits! Seriously, I decided to do a juice fast for a couple of days, trying to "jump start" my system. So far today I've had two: apple/carrot/beet/ lemon/ginger for breakfast and apple/celery/lemon for snack. I'm going to wash veggies to fix "lunch" now. But my head is pounding -- sugar and caffeine withdrawal combined with sinus challenges that just won't go away. Oh, yes, and the dust enveloping our house as we pack and clean. Tonight I'll have a soupy juice-type thing. Kids and DH will probably have pasta. I've packed most of my cookbooks and a lot of the pots/pans/food staples, so there's a horrible temptation at this point to eat out. The caffeine is going to be really tough, but I *need* to do it to curb my Starbucks habit. This is particularly important since my business is moving in a month or so and will be right across the street from a Starbucks. So, if I get a handle on my addiction *now,* I won't be so broke later! Take care, Paula J. - Sant & Brown Tuesday, February 24, 2004 7:52 AM Re: Lenten abstinences ... Guest guest
I hear ya! *lol* Isn't addiction to food and drink a strange thing? But you can do it!! I have faith in you - we all do. And think of those saved calories (if you put milk or soy plus sugar in your coffee) as well as the extra cash that you're not paying Starbucks! Your juices sound yummy. I really must get into juice again - used to around twenty years or so ago and then for some reason stopped. When do you move? We're interviewing movers, getting estimates, etc. right now. Looks like the third of April to be outta here and the sixteenth to move into the new place (homeless in a hotel in between ;=)).I've stll got so many cupboards and drawers to sort out ;=( Keep up your strength, fight the good fight, socks up, all that stuff *lol* Best, Pat -- SANTBROWN townhounds/ vegetarianslimming/ HOMEPAGE: http://www.angelfire.com/art/pendragon/ ---------- * " There are too many idiots in this world.
