Guest guest
Does anyone know if I can sub. miso in a recipe with something else, like braggs? I want to make a soup recipe tonight that calls for only a teaspoon of miso and I typically do not use miso, and hate to buy some just for a teaspoon. Any help would be appreciated! Guest guest
I really resisted buying Miso for my first few vegetarian years and thought I was making a good substitution when I used Braggs. Then I relented and bought some Miso and realized that the depth of flavour and quality of finished product is so much superior with Miso. Once you've tasted the difference, it will be hard to substitute. Ignorance is bliss. Linda (Ontario)
Guest guest
Hi Nancy - I don't use miso either, so I really don't know what to suggest as a substitute. But I would think that something quite *strong* in flavour is called for. My understanding is that it is a paste about the texture of a nut butter and therefore the substitute would have to be more than a teaspoon of the liquid such as Braggs in order to get the intensity of flavour. Do you see what I mean? have a look at this link for an idea of what it is that you're missing and what miso usually substitutes *for* (as in the other way around ;=)). Bear in mind, please, that this isn't a vegetarian site, okay? http://www.foodsubs.com/CondimntAsia.html Do you have any other sort of beanpaste that you could use? It wouldn't taste the same, of course, but . . . Or you could use a veg stock cube. I wouldn't hassle it too much - and I'm sure you haven't *lol* Good luck - and let us know how it turned out, okay? Guest guest
Hi Jeanne, Maybe garbanzo beans/chickpeas mashed to a paste without any added liquid? Would that be thick enough, do you think? You might lose a little of the salty miso taste but maybe could get that back with some liquid aminos or soy sauce? These do sound good; I want to try them too.
