I saw a column in " Vegetarian Times " (NOV-DEC) and I thought it was

interesting. It was a general question for readers to respond

to: " Are you for or against fake meat products (soy burgers, soy hot

dogs, etc.)? " I personally like it because it is quick and easy.

However, others pointed out that, if they don't like normal meat,

then why would they want to taste a fake version of it. I thought

that was a good point, and it actually made me think really hard

about meat substitutes (I always said that I became a vegetarian

because I didn't like the taste of meat; now I realize that I did it

more because I don't like the idea of eating animals). So what do

you think about meat substitutes and why?

I thnk some folks get a little carried away and out of touch with the

real world. Maybe would be healthier to eat all raw foods and drink

only herbal tea and fruit juiices ( of couse other stuff like soy milk

etc.) Probably are psychological anchors relating to the foods we enjoy

but being hungry and having a veggie burger does nothing to me relating

to want to eat meat ( if anything, in my opinion, it can help one

realize how much better than meat it tastes and how much easier to

diguest). Also the phase " whatever works " to becoming a vegetarian

carries more weight than getting nitpicky. Being a vegan for four years

I've had to hear alot of opinions from so called purists. Other topics

include not wanting to eat a BK veggie burger because meat is broiled on

the same racks or that they promote meat. For sure a good point I guess

however If you're on the go and are hungry and you don't have your trail

mix with what else are going to get in fast food that has the protein

besides maybe a bean burrito with no cheese. It's fairly rare that I

even stop at a fast food spot however there does come a time when the

convenience and a busy schedual can outweigh other things. I agree with

your " quick and easy " on the soy burgers.

Dear Reese,

I also read that column in VT; meat analogs are not for me. I am not

interested in eating something that " tastes like " beef, chicken or

bacon.

Though I am not vegan, I am thinking of not renewing my VT subscription,

as the magazine seems to have taken a different approach to

vegetarianism the past few months. A survey revealed that alot of the

readers are not veg, but occasionally prepare veg meals, so the magazine

is including more recipes with butter, cheese and other dairy products,

to accommodate these readers.

I read a newspaper article this past week about " flexitarians " - folks

who are " flexible vegetarians " because they still eat fish or chicken.

To this I say - (and please excuse me for shouting) - IF YOU EAT ANY

KIND OF FLESH, YOU ARE NOT A VEGETARIAN.

Ahem, off of my soapbox, end of rant :)

As if they couldn't find dairy recipes elsewhere! Sheeeeesh!!!

Yes, I was going to to VT - because I can't find copies easily since

we've moved - but the last copy I bought was heavy on the dairy. I have no

objection to vegetarians eating dairy, barring the health thingie, and I am

myself not really vegan, but . . .

That echo you heard was me. No wonder the world is confused!

Best,

I love the pseudomeats and see no issue with them. I don't eat vegetarian

chicken patties

or veggie sausage because i want the flavor of chicken or sausage but because

those

meatless substitutes just taste really good! I also love them because i can

substitute them

into my non vegetarian families recipes and get them to see that their favorite

meals can

still be delicious without eating yucky animal flesh. I like it when i can make

my husband

a vegetarian chilli using seasoned tvp and he doesn't realize he's not eating

meat until he's

done and i tell him. If all i ate were rice and beans and vegetable dishes all

the time, i can't

see it persuading many of my friends to try going veggie... but when i make

stir fry veggies

with seasoned veggie chicken strips - they say - hey this isn't bad! :)

Is VT Vegetarian Times or Vegan Times? Or am I wrong on both counts? My point

being, if it's Vegetarian not Vegan, what is the problem with recipes that

include these products?

I agree that I do not usually care for meat analogs. However, my son recently

took me to a wonderful Vietnamese vegetarian restaurent in San Francisco which

was doing a very brisk business. They had a lot of vegetarian " meat " . I tried

them out of curiosity, but ate very little because I am on a very low fat diet

and did not know about the fat content. They had an odd texture--kind of gummy.

I do admit that when I am in a hurry, I buy some of the " meat " soy products in

our Coop deli case to make sandwiches because they are a source of low fat

protein for me. With our Coop's bakery substantial whole grain bread, it is a

satisfying lunch when I am in a huge hurry. Other than that I never use them.

They all remind me of belogna with different colors and spices.

Peace

Kathleen

Okayyyyy ;=) There's a difference between pseudomeat or fake meat or meat

analog (whatever you want to call it) and veggie burgers (some of which of

course may indeed be designed to taste meatlike, some not), tofu, seitan,

tempeh, etc. etc. beanburgers, etc. All things that are in patty form are not

pseudomeats, right? Right.

That said, there's no reason at all why vegetarians or vegans should not eat

pseudomeats if they like the taste of them. A vegetarian is one who does not

eat meat, including poultry and fish/sealife; a vegan does not eat/use any

animal products. Those restrictions aside, 'pretend' foods are not prohibited.

If

I carve (would that I could!) a watermelon in the form of a dragon (an unlikely

form of meat, I agree) and later eat it or more likely destroy it, I have not

done

harm to anything but a watermelon (and perhaps my artistic ego) LOL

There are, however, those who for religious reasons cannot and will not

consume food that has been polluted by contact with meat - real meat, not

pseudomeat. That must be respected and not put down by being thought of as

some kind of fussiness that should be got over in a real world. Their world is a

real world too ;=)

Me? I figure if it's vegetarian (or vegan, if you prefer), eat it - but only if

you like

it.
