Guest guest
The Miami Herald, our local paper carried this AP (Associated Press) article about the slaughterhouse - http://asia.news./041201/ap/d86n5hh84.html which was doubly disturbing because the abuses were so shocking and the response from the company and kosher authorities was so poor . Here is a response I wrote to the paper: Please be assured that there is a considerable amount of controversy in the Jewish community about what is happening at the Agriprocessor plant in Postville in Iowa and the initial ill-conceived response by the spokesman for the Orthodox Union. Ritual slaughter is intended to be the most humane method of slaughter, but when the procedures are not carefully applied with that intent in mind, it ends up being no better than any other processing. While there are real life pressures to take shortcuts and speed the slaughterhouse " factory line, " for many Jews the concessions to this reality are not acceptable. As in all areas of human endeavor, our religious authorities generally take the high road and put compassion over profit. Some rabbinical leaders have condemned the the abuses in Pottsville as " definitely unacceptable by halachic standards. " In a press release, Dr. Richard H. Schwartz of JVNA, Jewish Vegetarians of North America speaks for the many Jewish vegetarians such as myself by deriding the shocking events reported at the largest glatt kosher slaughterhouse in the world. ================= I have a lot of information about the anti-cruelty responses from a number of messages received from Dr. Schwartz
