Guest guest
Hello I have been a vegetarian for a little more than 2 years. I have a disability that effects mobility and had been on a great deal of medication, which I gave up 2 years ago. Unfortunately the damage had been done. I weighed in at approximately 400 lbs. In the first year of a vegetarian lifestyle I lost approximately 70-75 lbs. Dropped 4 dress sizes, felt much better overall and didn't need to walk with a cane anymore. I've leveled off and can't seem to lose any more weight, though I'm very careful about what I eat, watching my fat intake and being aware of the amount of food I eat, having only eaten one meal a day, I began eating three light meals. Recently my doctor told me she saw no hope for me to lose any more weight unassisted. She referred me to bariatric surgery websites as my only hope. I don't believe that is the only option. My disability is 2 bone diseases and they can be very painful if I over extend myself physically. I do approx. 60-100 crunches a day and a variety of stretching and toning exercises daily. I'm wondering if there might be some other methods anyone else has utilized to accomplish significant weight loss? I'm considering " circuit training " that is supervised and a plan that's customized for me. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I might try, before considering bariatric surgery? I don't want to give in to a " quick fix " . Thank You for any suggestions you might have. Robin
Guest guest
Hi Robin, and welcome to the group. I lost weight and toned up with swimming, and found it easy on my joints. I do circuit training now, and like it because I'm done in 30 minutes and get a good workout. Maybe your doctor could recommend what kind of exercise would be safest for you, rather than send you off for surgery. If your current doctor feels that surgery is your only option, how about a second opinion? Regards, Karen
Guest guest
Robin you definitely have some challenges. I too agree with the swimming. You can get a good range of motion which will strengthen your joints and make them stronger. You can move as little or as much as you feel up too. Even a water aerobics class is fun. Just do what you can and no one in these classes has ever judged me. I just wish I could afford the membership right now. Guest guest
Robin, losing the first 75 pounds is fantastic. The exercise sounds great. You might lose more weight if you had more green vegetables and less of other stuff. Eliminating dairy would also help. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ from Maida. Guest guest
I love water aerobics, but can't do it any more. Here I live in a senior complex, with a pool and free water aerobics 5 mornings a week, but my orthopedic surgeon won't give me a release to do the one kind of exercise I love. I have been dropping some of my vegetarian groups and going on arthritis and total hip replacement groups to find out what other people are doing. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ from Maida.
