Good Morning

I have been in bed all night thinking about this...

On the TV last night UK had a program about Atkins (Fat or Fiction) on

it they had a " vegetarian " weighing 23stone. She had gone off her

vegetarian diet to do Atkins for speedy weight-loss.

Two Questions:

1. Vegetarianism is healthy why could someone get to 23 stone?

2. Atkins goes against vegetarianism how could she still call herself

one?

Totally confused and need some answers.

Thanks

Santie

A balanced vegetarian diet is healthy, but foods such as chips, crisps,

chocolate, cakes, biscuits, etc are vegetarian (with exceptions), if you eat

a lot of fatty foods such as chips, you are going to put weight on and it is

easy to become 20+ stone, it was only around 2 years ago that I was up 25+

stone and a vegetarian as I didn't do a lot of exercise and did eat crisps

and chips rather than healthy foods.

I'm now just over 14 stone aiming to loose another 2 stone and (all going

well) should reach my goal in the next 2 - 3 months.

As for her calling herself a vegetarian, I can't comment, I don't know her

reasons for her calling herself a vegetarian.

I'm sorry that I don't know how to equate " stone " with " pound, " but as

Jon points out, vegetarian does not necessarily mean healthy. If this

woman says she is veg and on Atkins, I would guess that she gets her

protein not from meat but from dairy, and if it is " full-fat " dairy,

she's consuming huge amounts of fat.

1 stone = 14 pounds = (approx) 6 1/2 kilo.

And eggs. Eggs are also vegetarian. You could do quite a bit of protein

between the dairy and the eggs. And huge amounts of fat. The fat of course is

fine by Fatkins :=(

Santie,

My best friend and co-worker has been on Atkins for four years,

I've watched her yo-yo up and down, watched her consume huge amounts

of meat and meat fats at one sitting over lunch.

She was the first person to criticize my decision to become

Vegetarian 2 years ago. She kept telling me how my diet was going to

be so unhealthy, how I could never get the vitamins and minerals my

body needed from veggies. She kept telling me that the vegetables I

was eating had no nutritional benefit.

When we would get our lunches out of the fridge at work and go

to her office to eat, she would make a big production about eating

the meat in front of me, always telling me that her way (Atkins) was

the only way. She criticized me daily, as I used 1 T. of fat free

dressing on my salad, she would put 1/2 a bottle, (no kidding!!!) of

fatty dressing on her salad, ending up with more dressing than

greens. She would cut up half a ring of bologna into her salad and

scoff at me eating carrot sticks.

I want to offer a personal note, " food for thought " as it were:

I was more than 25 stone when I became vegetarian, partly

because of circumstances beyond my control... making the choice to

move to vegetarianism was two fold for me... one was health reasons

and the other was that I was always into animal rights and needed to

stop being a hypocrate.

I lost approximately 5.3 stone the first year. I'm eating

healthy, no chips, crisps, sweets, pop, nothing like that and my

weight loss has leveled off. For some of us it's quite possible to

be heavy and eat healthily. There are many other factors involved

when people become so overweight, it's not all about what or how

much they are eating.

I guess I'm trying to say, don't feel " shock horror " at the

thought of someone being so large and vegetarian. They may be doing

all they can to achieve weight loss and a healthier body.

Thyroidism, medications, disabilities, depression can all add to the

dilema some of us face daily.

I work for an agency in the social services field that

specifically serves the disabled population. We talk about

sensitivity and acceptance every day. One of the board members

recently said, " Since when is not being able to push yourself away

from the table, a disability? " I was so insulted. Myself and another

co-worker quickly explained to her how that misconception can hurt

and offend people.

Just because someone is large or struggling with weight loss

doesn't necessarily mean they are eating junk food.

That's just a thought to chew on... :)

I have lost 10 pounds in 5 weeks being vegetarian. Most of that weight

came off after I gave up dairy. I did do the Atkins diet and became very

ill. I was eating less then 20-30 carbs a day. My doctor became very

alarmed when my vision failed. I never knew that carbohydrates are critical

to good eye health. I now eat a minimum of 100 grams of carbs a day. I

still am loosing weight but it is coming off slowly. That is just fine with

me as long it does come off. I dread once I do loose all of the weight I

will need a tummy tuck to get rid of all of the excess skin but I will feel

great once it is gone. I still have a long way to go. I figure at this

rate it will take me about a year to loose enough for the surgery. It will

take me that long to save up the money for it too.

Hiya Robin

Please don't get me wrong I was not shocked and horrified by the

weight, I was shocked that someone who is vegetarian could go on an

Atkins diet which in my mind is completely about MEAT. I suppose I am

a bit of a " Save the Animals " person.

Apologies to anyone who tought I was " size-ist " . Being a little big

myself and DH being diagnosed morbidly obese - that's the last thing

from my mind.

Okay, please do not adjust your sets.

About Fatkins: believe it or not, there is a *vegetarian* (but not vegan) form

of

the diet. I am not saying it is healthy and I am not recommending it, but it

does

exist. Knowing this, I am tending to give the TV-hyped overweight vegetarian

who 'went on Atkins' the benefit of the doubt.

I am now going to give the link to this form of the diet - again, not to

recommend it LOL - but to show that it exists and in the hope of preventing

further distress and misunderstanding on the 'shock horror' subject.

I am grateful to a member who posted this link way back when ;=) It was

posted for information only and is re-posted for the same reason.

Okay? Now let's get on with some healthy eating LOL

Best love, Pat ;=)
