Guest guest
I am in the same boat as you are as far as loosing weight. I have a couple of health issues which make loosing weight all the more challenging. I have Insulin Resistance and PCOS. I need to loose about another 60-70 pounds. I have found even being a vegetarian or even vegan it is still easy to gain weight. I still cut back on the carbs and the ones I do eat come from fresh fruit and whole grains. The occasional piece of dark chocolate help me with cravings. I avoid most sugars and sugar substitutes. I have had to learn to read labels as I am allergic to Soy products. Since I have cut them out of my diet my skin conditions have totally cleared up. I actually picked up my knitting today for the first time in over a month since my hands have healed up. No I am not the granola type. I just like to knit. Most major grocery store chains have a nutritionist on staff who can help you to read the labels and the service is almost always free. I learned about different breads and the more I learn the more likely I am to start making my own breads. I learned about butter alternatives and how to find protein in vegan friendly ways. I do try to avoid milk and occasionally eat eggs. I now buy those for the local poultry club since I know those birds are well treated. Whoever posted that link earlier thank you. I would rather my egg money go the local 4-H anyways. My dad was a leader and taught the children how to treat their birds right. This is what so far is working for me. I wish you the same luck. Remember you may loose a few pounds at first then level out. This is your body's way of healing and adjusting to the fat loss and muscle gain. Exercise is important. Housework and almost any activity is exercise. Even walking the mall for a few hours counts. Never beat yourself up for not doing a formal workout every day or if you cheat a little. Too many changes at once is difficult to stick with. I have wanted to give up about every other day. Then I look at some new email from this group or see a new study released about diet and exercise. Today hubby took a video tape of our puppies playing in the snow for the first time. I was in it. I am motivated to start all over again. Granted I look better for the last 20 pounds lost but I still have ways to go. I am proud of what I have accomplished and did not cringe like I usually do at my appearance. We are all here to support one another and sometimes we even give too much advice or in inadvertent ways try to show our beliefs. Take what you need at the time and do not feel guilty if someone seems to be doing something better or differently from you. You have to live in your body and you know it best. Learn all you can and I suggest keeping a food diary. Kirsten kanklez21 [kanklez21] Saturday, February 12, 2005 4:50 PM New here, hello! I am new to this club, so I wanted to put up this message. Guest guest
Hello and Welcome! > I am overweight, and want to become thin. I turned to vegan-ism as a diet. I >need all the support, help, and advice that I can get! Do I understand you to mean that you are have been a dietary vegan ('vegan- ism as a diet') - or that you have recently turned to veganism as a means to lose weight? If the latter, then this will be very new to you! Please have a look at our Files for lots of good, low-fat and low-cal recipes (the vegan recipes are marked 'Vegan') and check out the abundance of sites in the Links file for more help. Also of course you must feel free to ask anything you need ;=) There are wonderful people in this group who have had a lot of experience as vegetarians and vegans and can advise you about ingredients, menus, etc. Just ask! We hope you enjoy the group ;=) All very best wishes, Pat (group co-owner)
Guest guest
Hello, Great to get to know you. I too am new to the group and looking for some supportive friends. I am in the same boat as you are. I gained an incredible amount of weight due to a disability and medications. 2 years ago I turned to vegetarianism as a way of changing my life. I wanted to " clean out " my system and start over fresh. I gave up all the medications and gave up all meat of any kind, all white flour, sugars, all sweets, soda pop, chips, etc. I lost a great deal of weight in the first year. The second year things began leveling off. Now it's been some time since I've lost any weight and may have actually put a couple of pounds back on. I've increased my exercise, cut back even more on the amount of food I'm eating, try to eat three regularly timed meals throughout the day, I drink soy milk, eat an egg maybe once a month and use only whole wheat breads and pastas. I eat brown rice and only veggie cheeses, rarely. I came to this group at the suggestion of the person that's supported me through these two years and encouraged me to become vegetarian in the first place. He's stumped as to what else he can suggest to assist me in my efforts to lose weight and get healthy. He thought this group might have some ideas he'd not thought of, or perhaps I could find someone in a similar situation and we could support one another. I totally agree with what Kirsten replied to you. She said all the things I so needed to hear and I thank her for that. Please feel free to contact me at any time, I would like a chance to share our journey. Sincerely, Robin , " kanklez21 " <kanklez21> wrote: > > > I am new to this club, so I wanted to put up this message. I am > overweight, and want to become thin. I turned to vegan-ism as a > diet.
