Guest guest
* I have dropped about 12 pounds in the last 6 weeks on the vegan diet. I have a whole battery of tests and my blood work is all normal. Thyroid and iron is perfect. Why am I still so tired? I'm not sleepy tired I am just so down and can't seem to motivate myself to do anything. If I do simple chores I get out of breath. I need something to give me a boost but I cannot take St. Johns Wort because it gives me heart palpitations and I would rather eat healthy foods instead of taking a supplement. I am taking a multi vitamin and vitamin B-12. Any other suggestions would be helpful. My doctor wants to put me back on antidepressants. I do not want to undo all of the hard work I have done by getting all of the junk out of my system for the last 6 weeks. Kirsten

Guest guest
Firstly, I AM NOT A MEDICAL PRACTITIONER and anything I say you should check with your doctor first before trying. There is a connection to what we eat and our moods. You may not be eating what is necessary for even moods and energy (not sure I said that right). I know some people stay away from carbohydrates altogether when trying to loose weight and become healthy. The problem is that we need complex carbohydrates for both stability of our moods and energy. I did a google search on depression and food and came up with a bunch of articles. You can go to: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en & lr= & client=firefox-a & rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%\ 3Aofficial_s & q=depression & as_q=food & btnG=Search%C2%A0within%C2%A0results to find them. One article that seems to be good is at: http://www.wholehealthmd.com/hk/remedies/disp/1,1459,453,00.html There are even recipes at this site to help. All are not veg*n but plenty are. Psychology Today also has a site which addresses food and depression at: http://cms.psychologytoday.com/search/search.cgi?q=depression+food. There is also a book entitled: Potatoes Not Prozac: How to Control Depression, Food Cravings and Weight Gain by Kathleen Demaisons which may be helpful to you. There is a product called SAMe which might be helpful to you. Here is what it says on the side of the box: " Beneficial levels of SAMe (S-Adenosylmethionine-Methionine), an amino acid naturally produced by the body, may be reduced by aging. Many studies exist regarding the use of SAMe supplementation to enhance mood and promote a positive outlook without side effects. Clinical studies also show SAMe contributes to joint health by stimulating the production of GAGs (Glycosaminoglycans), important components of connective tissue. " It does state on the box that if you are taking any medication or are under the care of a physician for depression or a related disorder, contact your physician before using this product. I found this product when I was looking for a natural antidepressant for my mother who had just lost her husband of 30+ years. I was also looking for something to help with the pain I have in my knees due to years of running and skydiving. The gal at Nutrition S'Mart (the HFS I use) suggested this for both of us. I have to tell you that it has worked wonders for my knees and my mom seems to be doing better also. You start with the lower dosage - I think it starts at 200 mg and work your way up to a dosage that works for you. There are some articles at the link below (google search on SAMe and depression) concerning SAMe (pronounced sam E) if you want to find out more about this supplement. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en & lr= & as_qdr=all & q=+%22SAMe%22 & as_q=depression & \ btnG=Search%C2%A0within%C2%A0results God's Peace, Gayle
Guest guest
My first suggestion is how much water do you drink a day. Your body uses about 8 glasses... even if you don't work hard labor. My suggestion is to focus on at least a gallon maybe 1.5 gallons a day and see how your energy level goes. Most people overlook the simple things in life and water is a must for complete health. From the simpleton.... Guest guest
This is very helpful. I do eat carbs from fruits veggies and complex carbs like my homemade bread made with whole grains. I also eat beans and other legumes. I do try to avoid all refined sugars and flours. If it is processed or pre made I generally avoid it. I like to cook all of my won foods since I know what goes into them. This is what is frustrating me so much. Guest guest
A large majority of my diet comes from leafy greens. I try to exercise but I tire out so quickly. I do maybe 5 minutes and just literally have to collapse. I have just had a complete physical and the doctor can find nothing wrong. He said everything looks better hen last year. All of my sugars are great and I lowered my cholesterol by 30 points. This is why I am getting so frustrated. I had more energy by eating dairy, meats, and other junk foods. Guest guest
Hi, Perhaps your body is still detoxing and adjusting to your changing lifestyle. I agree with the others. Even if it is difficult, continue to try to do a little exercise every day (don't push too hard - a short walk or something - if you haven't been in the habit), drink lots of water etc. Another thing that helps me when I get low is taking Motherwort. I know you don't want supplements, but it might help. It is an herb. I take it in tincture form. It doesn't give you a " high " . It just balances your emotions out a bit. I don't have my herbal books handy so I can't tell you of potential negative side effects, but I'm sure you could find them online or at the library. I started taking Motherwort in the later months of my last pregnancy and still take it periodically when I have a low spirits/low energy day. Oh, yeah, I just thought of something else... Oats are supposed to be good for the spirits. They are always recommended for post natal depression. I have also heard that getting enought EFA (essential fatty acids) can affect your body balance, so you might look into those. Flax seed oil is a good source. I hope you feel better. Guest guest
Kirsten, here are some suggestions to help you drink more water. Drink bottled water. Drink it cold, or sip from a bottle of frozen bottled water as it is defrosting. Add lemon or lime juice to it. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ from Maida. Guest guest
Flaxseed is great for sure..... or maybe a tablespoon of flaxseed oil on your salads along with Extra Virgin Olive oil. As far as being able to drink copious amounts of water... First, I choose distilled water at 58 cents a gallon to drink. Second, I ALWAYS have a bottle with me to be able to drink as much as I want when I want to because for me, if I have to go out of my way to drink water I just don't drink. Third, I drink it cool and NEVER with ice, cause I just cant drink a lot if its iced. Fourth that I find the most helpful is the container I keep the water in. I found a clear plastic bottle from Wal-Mart that has a screw on lid. the top has a flip top straw on the cover and another plastic straw that goes on the underside of the lid into the bottle. I find this very good in drinking quantities at a time because its a fairly large straw, and you don't really taste the water as much using a straw as compared to a glass, not to mention you can drive with out unscrewing a bottle top and taking your eyes off the road when you try to drink. I have a 20 minute drive to work and back so I generally drink at least a quart on the way to and from work. If you'd like to see a photo of the water jug (I have about 8 of these all over the place) you can press on this link to the photos for this group http://photos.vegetarianslimming/vwp?.dir=/tguidry & .s rc=gr & .dnm=Water+jug.jpg & .view=t & .done=http%3a//photos./grou p/vegetarianslimming/lst%3f%26.dir=/tguidry%26.src=gr%26.view=t You may also check out the product called Barley Life which is a natural supplement of enzymes along with vitamins and minerals. Guest guest
Gee tom thanks for sharing those photos. You certainly look like a healthy, happy and handsome man. I would love to chat more with you about gardening. I want to grow my own wheat grass but what do you do with it? Also how do you grow the sprouts? You can email me off line at cc1. I so miss my garden after the town made me ear it out. Well if I do not sell my house this year it is going back in. It had to come out due to construction in my area and they did not want it contaminated. The soil tests have come out great and I make my own mulch and fertilizer. I use the leftover bulk from my juicer and put it right back into the garden. Kirsten Tom [tguidry] Tuesday, February 22, 2005 8:49 AM RE: I'm tired what am I doing wrong? I have also heard that getting enought EFA (essential fatty acids) can affect your body balance, so you might look into those. Flax seed oil is a good source. I hope you feel better. Guest guest
Maybe, if you would be willing, that would be a great topic for the OT list? I'm sure we could all learn quite a bit from each other's gardening experiences and know-how. I know I'm always wanting to see how others do things in their gardens. Just a thought and hope I'm not intruding. God's Peace, Gayle - Carousel Cheesecakes Tuesday, February 22, 2005 9:41 AM RE: I'm tired what am I doing wrong? If you'd like to see a photo of the water jug (I have about 8 of these all over the place) you can press on this link to the photos for this group http://photos.vegetarianslimming/vwp?.dir=/tguidry <http://photos.vegetarianslimming/vwp?.dir=/tguidry & . s> & .s rc=gr & .dnm=Water+jug.jpg & .view=t & .done=http%3a//photos./grou p/vegetarianslimming/lst%3f%26.dir=/tguidry%26.src=gr%26.view=t You may also check out the product called Barley Life which is a natural supplement of enzymes along with vitamins and minerals. Guest guest
Kirsten, here is a good article about iron. I know that you need to be getting vitamin C along with iron sources to get the full benefit: http://www.vrg.org/nutrition/iron.htm ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ from Maida.
