Guest guest
I went back to my doctor after my recent visit, at which time she told me that I could never lose weight doing what I've been doing... that I needed Bariatric surgery and that was my only hope. I talked to my veggie friend and he suggested that I see her again, only this time, with the intent of telling her how she made me feel. So I did. This time, the woman laughed at me, out right, because of my choice to become vegetarian. She told me that my body obviously wasn't adjusting to the vegetarian lifestyle, therefore it wasn't healthy for me and I should add chicken and fish to my diet and cut out the carbs, like the chickpeas, carrots and fruits I've been eating. She pointed out that I'm not eating too much, eating fresh healthy foods, exercising more than I was physically able to 2 years ago and still I've stopped losing weight. She recanted her previous position, stating that bariatric surgery wouldn't help me, as its intent is to limit food intake and that's something I don't have a problem with. She pointed out that I have an enormous amount of stress in my life right now, have begun menopause and a lot of emotional issues going on, all of which can have an adverse effect on one's health. She wasn't even willing to praise me for the reduction in my blood pressure, as I've been taking Hawthorn for about a month and a half and lowered it, naturally from 156/90 to 134/86. Due to an emotional low recently, feeling abandoned and alone... I've lost my veggie friend that's been my support and encouragement for 2 years. I'm being sent to a dietician and an endocronologist and considering joining " Curves for Women " a circuit workout program. I'd just appreciate some feedback from anyone that's had some problems throughout their journey and been able to pull it back together... Thanks so much... Guest guest
Dear Robin, It's understandable that you've been feeling down, considering the unpleasant experience with your physician, and the loss of a supportive friend. Do you think that it's time to find another physician, one who will listen to your questions and concerns w/out judging you? Please try to find another doctor. You deserve better treatment than you've been receiving, IMHO. I belong to a " Curves-like " gym and it's been very helpful for me. I do not like to exercise and rarely stay with a program for more than a couple of months. I've been doing this program for nearly a year and really like how it works (all women in a very supportive environment). I can do a full workout in 1/2 hour, which keeps me motivated. Good luck, Robin. You're definitely on the right path! Best regards, Karen
Guest guest
Robin I would like to chat with you off list. You are going through so much. You need support from someone who understands what you are dealing with. I have PCOS and my doctors say it is common for women to continue to gain weight with it as it attacks the reproductive organs and the pancreas. I am successfully loosing weight with this group. I do need to limit my carbs a bit but as long as they are good carbs I have no problems. Drop me a line off list and we can talk about challenges and maybe share a few tips. Let me know where you live and maybe we can even find you a good doctor. cc1 Kirsten Ask Me [DaisyChain1964] Sunday, February 27, 2005 11:19 PM Update on my Doctor Visit I went back to my doctor after my recent visit, at which time she told me that I could never lose weight doing what I've been doing... that I needed Bariatric surgery and that was my only hope. Guest guest
Ok, 1. Get a new doctor. 2. Does she think bariatric surgery is going to LOWER your stress. Quite the opposite. I went through the whole procedure to have bariatric surgery and at the end I backed out. I cannot imagine NOT eating what I want at any given time. If I go to a party I want to have a piece of cake. After this surgery you can NEVER eat normally again. Also, your insurance has LOTS of hoops you will have to jump through one being a 6 month supervised diet (most likely). Anyway, I'd be happy to chat with you off list if you like. Candace
Guest guest
This surgery is very dangerous for someone who is even an occasional binge or compulsive eater. There is a lap band devise which is reversible but event that has significant risks. For some folks it is advisable. For a woman like Robin with her health concerns already I would need to be convinced it is the right choice. If someone can control their diet and eat right and exercise then the surgery makes no sense. Something else is going on to prevent the weight loss. It isn't the diet or the exercise. In my case it is Insulin Resistance and PCOS. Weight loss is possible but it takes medication, diet, exercise, and diligence. Everything I do is with the cooperation of my two doctors, nutritionist, and dietician. It has taken years of us doing trial and error with medication and finding out what foods cause me problems. Some women with hormonal problems are believed to have problems with digesting animal proteins. It is recommended they get their protein from vegetables, nuts, soy, and other plant sources. However some women have trouble with soy. I cannot eat it at all. This makes a vegetarian diet very difficult. Perhaps this will help some of you women out there. Maybe you can discuss some of the research with your doctors and see if you should try a diet which eliminates certain foods to see if perhaps there is an allergy or sensitivity to certain foods. Guest guest
Hi Robin ;=) > I went back to my doctor after my recent visit, at which time she > told me that I could never lose weight doing what I've been doing... > that I needed Bariatric surgery . . . Yes, I remember your writing about this :=( >This time, the woman laughed at me, out right, because of my choice > to become vegetarian. She told me that my body obviously wasn't > adjusting to the vegetarian lifestyle, therefore it wasn't healthy > for me Oh dear! Well, you know, a lot of doctors are untrained when it comes to diet - and a lot of people, doctors or otherwise, are upset at the thought of vegetarianism. Laughing at you, however, is inexcusable! >She recanted her previous > position, stating that bariatric surgery wouldn't help me, as its > intent is to limit food intake and that's something I don't have a > problem with. Well, that'll be a relief to you at least! - you didn't want the surgery, as I read from your previous post on the subject. > I'm being sent to a dietician and an endocronologist and considering > joining " Curves for Women " a circuit workout program. Well, all this sounds good - and perhaps your dietician, who should have some training LOL, will be able to find a form of vegetarian diet that is compatible with your beliefs/philosophy (although I re-read that you became vegetarian for health reasons). > I'd just appreciate some feedback from anyone that's had some > problems throughout their journey and been able to pull it back > together... I think you have been well advised to seek a second opinion - another doctor. What it seems you need right now is encouragement and serious dietary advice - if you have stopped losing weight there could be a reason you have not thought of. You never know ;=) Best of luck with finding a good medical doctor and a good dietician. I am sorry you have lost your friend - obviously a great inspiration to you and now a great loss. Best love, Pat ;=)
Guest guest
As everyone has already said, you should switch doctors. I'd also file a complaint. Doctors are supposed to help people, not make them feel worse. What she did was blatantly wrong. Don't give up! ~~Melinda , " Ask Me " <DaisyChain1964@h...> wrote: > > I went back to my doctor after my recent visit, at which time she > told me that I could never lose weight doing what I've been doing... > that I needed Bariatric surgery and that was my only hope. Guest guest
(HUGS) Robin. You need a new doc. No reputable physician would laugh at a patient. I'm glad you're going to see the endocrinologist & dietician. I've heard from friends that Curves is good. Hang in there!!
