Guest guest
Technically you are pescetarian, Annice. I am as well. It is important that you tell people that technically you ar enot vegetarian, because when people like you & I call ourselves vegetarian, we are mis-educating people- who then try to feed fish to true vegetarians. That is not fair to true vegetarians- I have been there and it is rather rude for someone to assume you eat fish when you are vegetarian. Example- I do not eat seafood- only fish.. out of my own fussiness. Therefore if I tell someone I am vegetarian- I do not expect them to brng me shrimp or crab- or even salmon. I expect vegetarian food. it's up to you & me and the rest of the pescetarians to admit we are not actually vegetarian. That is the right thing to do really:). But you might be interested to know that most vegetarian restaurants in Italy (we just got back from a trip there) also serve fish. Guest guest
Hi! Can someone please settle an argument for for me? A friend tells me that some vegetarians eat fish and I say NONE do. Who is right, please? I have been a vegetarian since 2000 and have not touched a morsel of fish in that time! The only animal produce I do eat is dairy and eggs, all of which I adore! Thanks in advance!! PennyLane
Guest guest
Hi PennyLane, The answer to your question CAN be controversial as there are some who call themselves vegetarians and still eat fish. They are not vegetarians (no offense meant to anyone on this list who fits this category). By definition, a vegetarian is a person who does not consume fish. That would be a pescatarian (sp). There are many people who call themselves vegetarians but still eat chicken. Does that still make them a vegetarian? Not at all. Here is the Merriam Webster Dictionary definition of vegetarianism: " veg·e·tar·i·an·ism: the theory or practice of living on a diet made up of vegetables, fruits, grains, nuts, and sometimes eggs or dairy products. " Hope this helps. God's Peace, Gayle
Guest guest
PennyLane, If I ate fish, I would not consider myself a vegetarian. A vegetarian eats no flesh, whether it be turkey, chicken, pig, cow, lamb or fish. The American Heritage online dictionary defines vegetarianism as: The practice of subsisting on a diet composed primarily or wholly of vegetables, grains, fruits, nuts, and seeds, with or without eggs and dairy products. Hope that helps! Frances
Guest guest
pennylane200451 asked whether fish is vegetarian. No, it is not. A conscious life form is killed for food, so it is NOT vegetarian. A lot of people are confused about this. Some people use the term pesco vegetarian to describe people who follow a vegetarian diet plus fish. These are not real vegetarians, but they are on the right path. The good nutrients from fish, especially the Omega-3 essential fatty acids in fatty fish and fish oil, can be obtained other ways, mainly from flax seed, walnuts and DHA supplements. People who eat fish run a risk of taking in too much mercury from polluted waters. Factory farmed fish reduce this risk, but many of the problems with factory farming of land animals (regarding the health of the animals raised for food and negative effects on the environment) are also true of factory farmed fish. Eating unfertilized eggs and dairy does not involve killing, but there are cruelties involved especially in factory farming of these " food products " from living animals. There are also some serious health concerns about consuming dairy products, especially concentrated dairy as in cheese, yogurt, and ice cream. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ from Maida, Citizens for Pets in Condos: http://www.PetsinCondos.org
Guest guest
Thank you for your reply, quintmom - I can show it to the person who said vegetarians can eat fish. He stood his ground, this friend of mine, and swore blind that he was right! He stood his ground, this friend of > mine, and swore blind that he was right! Is your friend a 'vegetarian' himself? If he says he is, then he is rationalizing his eating of fish - making him, as someone says, a pescatarian, not in itself a bad thing to be but certainly not vegetarian. If not, he is simply misinformed and should have trusted you to know better. Ain't people funny, tho! I've had people argue with my husband and myself over what is a vegetarian - and of course they are not themselves vegetarians so . . . Stick to your - not guns, of course, but - principles! Guest guest
Hi Jennifer and welcome to the group! I see you just joined up, so I am hoping you'll tell us a little about yourself and what you like etc. About what you said: > i know some vegetarians that do eat fish... i dont thou... You picked up on an old thread, I see LOL As Karen has said, vegetarians don't eat fish. No me*t at all. The people you know are pescatarians - may even call themselves 'pesco-vegetarians'. But you'll have read all about that in the archives by now. Anyway I really look forward to talking to you on the list.
