Guest guest
Oh you temptress! LOL Well I did ask, didn't I? Okay, there's good news and not-so-good news here. First the not-so-good: As you'll guess this is far too high in fat content (cheese, pastry) for this group. You're trying to slim down? Then slim down you will - with help and encouragement. But the good news is two-fold: There are lots of good bean recipes without cheese and without pastry (pastry is hard to find without rather more fat than is good for those who are trying to lose weight) - check out our Files. Or invent your own! *And* if you have really done as you say . . . >I bake 'em and them freeze some in one slice containers for snacks. You can also freeze them uncooked. .. . . and you have these pies in your freezer - then hey you've just finished your holiday gift shopping! Wonderful treats for friends - and it takes you out of temptation's way. Perfect solution! Chat later? Best love, Pat
Guest guest
Okay, I have a few ideas that might slim this down a bit....I mean DANG! it looks so good! First off, use half the cheese that you would normally use and make it either reduced fat cheese (the stronger the better) or a soy cheese that is low in fat. Secondly, if we must do a crust here, how about 1/4 of a crust recipe, and just use it on top, like you would the potatoes on top of a shepard's pie. Then again, you could top it with potatoes or a biscuit-like or dumpling topping. Those you can all make low-fat. Just a couple of ideas. BTW, anyone tried the canned HEINZ Chili Beans? The label shows no animal products and I'm totally hooked! When they are on special, I pick up a couple of cans to keep in the pantry for days that I don't feel like cooking. On this list we are *always* interested in recipes that are good slimming recipes, low in fat and low in calories. If you have a bean pie recipe that can do that, then I'm sure some of our members would enjoy it! But it would have to be without pastry, wouldn't it? Stef had some great suggestions. (Thanks Stef!) Guest guest
Hi, This particular bean pie recipe is made with navy beans and it does have a vegetable shortening crust, so I don't know how slimming that would make it. Well... so much for my contribution. Pat <veggiehound wrote: >i have never heard of it > with cheese - and i have never heard of it made that way. but i do > have a recipe if you're interested. Guest guest
> This particular bean pie recipe is made with navy beans and it does have a vegetable shortening crust, so I don't know how slimming that would make it. Shocking to acknowledge, but some veg stuff is as fattening as the animal-based stuff - and it's so easy to forget that :-( I used to do it all the time. Still do from time to time - such as *not* remembering to look for low-fat soy products. <siggghhhh> Not fair! I think I'm going to see if I can make that rice crust work, though - that'd do for the base and then it'd be a matter of a thin layer of mashed potatoes, maybe, for the top? Mashed without butter or margarine, though. Is the navy bean filling of your bean pie very different to the one recently posted? I sometimes like to do something like that and skip the 'crust' except for the potatoes or sweet potatoes on top. Mostly, though, when I'm trying to lose weight (or maintain the losss - and when is one or the other not the case! LOL) I skip the whole idea of 'pie' altogether. Easier on my morale. Good to hear from you - more????? :-) Best love, Pat
Guest guest
you mean the one with the cheese? no, i didn't see a posting of the recipe but like i said, i've never heard of a bean pie made with cheese. for the bean pie recipe that i'm referring to, think sweet potato pie, and substitute the cooked potatoes with cooked navy beans, following all of the steps for prepping beans. i usually wash and boil them first for two minutes and let them rest for about two hours before rinsing them again and cooking them. you want the end product to be soft, and using some of the broth from them you would have to run the beans through a food processor first, for the smooth custard consistency. to make the pie vegan, i substitute regular milk with soy milk, or even better, coconut milk. but like you said, pie is an indulgence, no matter how you prepare it, vegetarian, vegan or no. jaki Pat <veggiehound wrote: > This particular bean pie recipe is made with navy beans and it does have a vegetable shortening crust, so I don't know how slimming that would make it.
