Quinoa flakes?

Greetings everyone, and Happy Easter!

I have seen several recipes on this list calling for " quinoa flakes " . Is

this an oatmeal substitute, or is it a cold cereal flake? I haven't seen

these in any of the health food stores, but maybe I'm not looking for the

right thing. It sounds like it would be a good thing to have in my pantry.

Thanks,

Christine

Dear Chirstine,

Quinoa Flakes look like oatmeal. and act like it too. It can be really

hard to find. I just moved to Vancouver Washington, and am having a

hard time finding a store that carries all the foods we like. It is a

wonder addition to any kitchen, as you can use it to subsitute oatmeal

or bread crumbs.

Hi Amy,

You know what? Today I visited a HFS I haven't been to before, and I think I

found the quinoa flakes. They came in a box, and they looked like they'd be

similar to oatmeal. It would be great, except for the price: $3.69 for a 12

oz box! I might be able to buy it sometimes for a special recipe, but I

won't be able to afford it on a regular basis. Unless I can find it for a

good price somewhere on the Internet. Does anyone know of a good source?

Amy, I hope in time you'll be able to find some stores in your area to buy

your special foods. Maybe as you get to know the town better and become

acquainted with more people there, you'll be able to find some sources. Good

luck in your search :)

Blessings,

Christine

Dear Chirstine,

That is a high price. But when buying a boxed product it usually is

higher. When I bought it in bulk I paid around 3.50 per pound I

believe. Which is still high, but it was so worth the price. I love

using Quinoa flakes instead of oatmeal. It took my family some time to

get used to it, but I think it has a rich and wonderful flavor. We are

just 5 minutes from Portland Oregon which is a nice big city, so as we

get settled I am hoping to do a lot of exploring and find some great

stores and markets for our special diet.

Christine,

I ordered some Buckwheat flakes last year and love using them in place of

oatmel in recipes. I think the boxes are bigger than the quinoa boxes too (at

least it seems like I get quite a bit more out of them). The prices also

seemed okay, although, you do have to pay for shipping them. I wish I could

get a local store here to carry them.

Hi:

I have been following some of the discussion about " hard to find " items. I'm

sure that many people who live in the Pacific Northwest are aware of this, but

some may not be. There is a company called " Azure Standard " that is located in

Dufur, OR that carries a lot of these type items. I just got their latest

catalog today. I couldn't find Quinoa Flakes in their catalog, however, I did

find the Quinoa Flour. They carry literally thousands of different products, and

they tend to zero in on bulk products, and other things that are desired by

natural, special-diet type of folks.

They also give " Free Delivery " if you happen to live in an area where they

deliver close by. They have special " Drops " where they drop an accumulation of

orders, for those in the general area. I know that they deliver to northern CA,

many places in OR, WA, ID, MT, and as far east as ND and/or SD -- can't remember

which.

They also have a " reasonably " priced catalog that lists the ingredients to ALL

of their products, so for those of us who are " label readers " this is a real

" God Sent. "

For those who live in other areas of the country, they will ship orders to them,

and many times, even with the shipping costs considered in, their products end

up being much cheaper than what you can find in local health food store -- if,

indeed you can find them at all. They also carry a large line of Organically

grown products of various kinds, kitchen appliances, etc.

I have ordered from them for years, and have always been happy with their

products, charges and service.

If anyone is interested in checking them out, you can contact them through the

following methods:

1 Phone Order Line 541-467-2230

2 24 Hour Fax Line 541-467-2210

3 Website Ordering www.azurestandard.con

Their office hours are:

9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday

7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday

7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday

Closed on Saturday

You could call them and find out if they deliver close to you, and then go from

there. They carry many things other than food, enough so a person could almost

make them their " one stop " shopping if they wanted to -- well, unless you are

shopping for clothes, a car or furniture.

Hope this may help someone who is looking for a source for healthy,

" hard-to-find " items.

Blessings, Sue

Sue,

I love Azure and highly recommend anyone ordering through them. I need to

place an order again but need to find out if we still have our drop area here

because the lady that was doing it was planning on stopping.

Where do you live?
