Soy Allergy?

Greetings,

Does anyone know what the symptoms of soy allergy or intolerance are? Are

they similar to celiac symptoms? I eat something made with soy just about

every day, and was wondering if maybe I might have a problem with it as well

as the gluten (I really hope not, because that would severely limit my

already limited diet :) )

Thanks for any info,

Christine

they can be very individual. my soy allergy symptoms include hives,

throat swelling, and anaphylaxis.

an intolerance would be even more individual.

try cutting it out of your diet for a couple weeks, then reintroduce it.

same old tricks. ;)

Hi Christine,

I have have gluten intolerance and also dairy/soy intolerance. I was told by my

gastroenterologist and a dietician that there is a significant number of celiacs

who do no tolerate soy as well. If you suspect soy is the problem, it would

definitely be worth a trial eliminating it for a month and see what happens.

Soy is very popular now, and it shows up in everything from supplements to

flavorings -- so you must be careful to check everything, just like you do for

gluten.

I struggle to find things to eat, but draw heavily from Indian, Thai, Greek and

Mexican cuisines. I use a pressure cooker a lot since I have to cook from

scratch. I use almond and sesame milk to replace the dairy and use a lot of

tahini sauces.

Hope this helps.

My dh can eat some things made with soy. . .and has to avoid others. It

seems the more " dense " soy products (like boca burgers) can bother him, but

soymilk and tofu is just fine.

Although I am not gluten-free myself, I cook gluten-free at home so my

husband can eat what the rest of the family eats. I understand the

frustrations expressed. I try to be so careful, but there are times I use a

seasoning or ingredient that bothers my husband. It is a process of

learning as we go, I guess. Unfortunately dh suffers sometimes because of

it.
