Guest guest
Is it possible to be vegan and gf and not have soy or nuts too? I'm breastfeeding my 13 month old and he is allergic to soy among others (alot of others!) and I'm avoiding nuts too since those are usually lifelong allergies. I am trying to learn to cook GF now and someday I would love to be vegan too, when I can go back to eating wheat, etc. Right now I'm eating some meat, but only because I need protein. I got on this list to find recipes and I must say this is a nice list! Kelli
Guest guest
vegan without soy or nuts? > Is it possible to be vegan and gf and not have soy or nuts too? Hi Kelli, I believe the answer to your question is " yes " , but with such diet restrictions it is important to be very careful to get enough of the proper nutrients. Nuts contain essential fatty acids, but they can be obtained from seeds instead. Lots of people don't use soy and remain vegan, but you have to read labels and find alternatives when necessary. Hopefully your baby will outgrow some of his allergies as he gets older. It just makes life easier, but if not, you can adjust well. Glad you've checked in. I'm sure others will have advice and input on this topic also. LaDonna
Guest guest
Kelli I understand your concern about nut allergies, but almond should be safe as a source of some protein nutrients. Almond is, strictly speaking, not a nut, but a member of the plum family (like the pit of a peach). It is often used to replace protein in hyper sensitive individuals. I believe you can do all those things, but you will have a harder time finding protein sources and will need to be doing alot of food combining to get the essential ingredients you need to support the brain and your child. Maybe people with more vegan experience than me could tell you some things to look out for. BL
Guest guest
Kelli > Is it possible to be vegan and gf and not have soy or nuts too? Of course! :-) >Right now I'm eating some meat, but only because I need protein. One can get all the protein necessary from a purely plant-based diet. You just have to eat a variety of *whole* plant foods (avoid refined foods) and enough calories to meet your energy needs. The variety is necessary to make sure we get the range of nutrients we need, and also because they vary in protein content. For example some fruits are low in protein, like apples which have only about 1% protein, but legumes, lettuce and other leafy greens are about 45% protein. Even if all you could eat was just lettuce and apples, you'd get plenty of protein as long as you ate enough calories because (according to the World Health Organization) humans only need between 10-15 % of their calories from protein. www.who.int/hpr/nutrition A varied diet of fruits, veggies, legumes, gf grains is brimming with protein. The Physician's Committee for Responsible Medicine puts out a colourful poster that they call The New Four Food Groups describing this. It can be ordered from their website www.PCRM.org And here is their article on protein, " The Protein Myth " . Fear about lack of protein is a common fear for people when they first start eating a vegan diet... http://www.pcrm.org/health/Info_on_Veg_Diets/protein.html Deborah
