***Flax seed and flax oil is an excellent vegan source of Omega 3's. .

..and so are walnuts.***

The Scoop on Salmon

by Leanne Ely, C.N.C.

You hear it all the time-salmon is so good for you because of

the Omega 3 fatty acids it offers those who partake. But the

scoop on salmon is that you better make sure you're taking a walk

on the wild side. Farmed salmon may be filled with carcinogenic

PCB's (polychlorinated biphenyls-byproducts of oils, hydraulic

fluids, transformer and electrical capacitors).

PCB's are problematic because they disrupt the endocrine system.

In other words, hormones making is altered causing such problems

as cancer, infertility and maybe even other sexual changes. This

is still being studied.

And while PCB's are banned, they persist in the environment and

are harbored in animal fat. In nature, salmon is a predator and

will eat other fish, besides the usual bugs and such. For the

most part, wild salmon live in fairly pristine areas and their

natural food is clean. However, farmed salmon is fed a

commercial fish meal made with fish that comes from all over the

world.

According to Jane Houlihan, vice president for research with the

Environmental Working Group, the commercial fishmeal is the

problem as it is highly contaminated with PCB's. PCB levels are

much higher in farmed fish-as much as 16 times the PCB's found

in wild salmon. Add to that the fact that farmed fish are also up

to twice the fat of wild salmon and you have a product with a

reputation for being healthy but in reality, isn't so hot.

You know what? I am SO sick of this. *tossing temper tantrum* I can't win!!!

I just can't win!!! I've been using fish and fish oils to control my mood

disorder for a few months and it works better than any of the rx meds I've ever

taken. But there's all the crap in the fish to worry about, not to mention that

my daughter is starting to ask when I'm going to stop with this experiment and

go back to being vegetarian. And the guilt doesn't make it any easier to choke

down the stuff! I just can't win :(

Sanda, have you tried flax seed oil? It contains all the essential fatty

acids that fish oil does and may do the same thing for your body. You might

try it and see what happens. It tastes strange at first, but over time I've

come to enjoy the flavor.

Sorry for sending in such a " discouraging " post. . .sometimes it's easier to

hide our heads in the sand, isn't it?

I take an organic flax seed oil I get from the health

food store. It does take a little getting used too but

its really not bad.

I mix the flax seed oil in a glass of orange juice or carrot/apple juice, add a

heaping tablespoon of nutritional yeast and it is not bad at all. Of course, I

like the taste of the yeast. My mother swore by evening primrose oil.

If you had to take a medicine derived from an animal product, to remain alive,

would your family be upset and guilting you. I think it's your own personal

choice whether to take fish oils or some plant based EFA. If it works for you,

don't stop on account of someone else's opinion. There are many ingredients in

commercial traditional medicine that make almost every pill from anti-biotic to

anti-seizure medicine not vegan and sometimes not even vegetarian.

Would your daughter tell you to stop your heart medication if she knew it

contain lactose (milk sugar) and some animal derived steroids?

Please, if you think it's right and helpful to you, and you are comfortable with

your decision stay strong about taking it. If you feel that she might have a

point an borage, hemp or evening primrose might help just as well, give them a

reasonable try. It's the only way you will know for sure.

Sometimes people have our best interests at heart but they don't have our heart

in their best interests.

Unfortunately, the efas are NOT the same, and the ones in flax seed oil are not

recommended for bipolar people, as it can bring on manic episodes. :( Oh, and I

knew already, I was just venting.

Sandra, damned if she does, damned if she doesn't... but if I do at least I'm

functioning while I'm damned

I'm curious too, Sylvia and Sandra. . .

.. . .and Sandra, you are allowed to vent all you want! I'm sorry about the

dilemma you are in. . .and you need to do whatever it takes to care for

youself properly. Can you share more information with us on " how " the efas

in fish and the plant sources (flax, walnuts, primrose oil) are not the

same? I'm curious.

Thanks,

LaDonna

Nope :( My psychiatrist recommended a book called the Omega 3 Connection, if

you're interested in more info.

All lithium did for my husband was teach him not to have emotions. He functions

much better with herbal, mineral and other alternate therapies.
