Hi Sandra,

About the mood swings, Have you thought of a totally different approach? Try

putting on some very quiet music and Think to yourself when these moments of

what I call desperation hit. Think to yourself, " Is this life or death or is it

one of these times that just are annoying to me? " Then if it IS life or death

then one of course must absolutely deal with it. BUT if it isn't; deal with it

when you are in a more calmed atmostphere and state of mind. Then it won't be so

exaspersting to you.

I just thought you might like to know what happened to me lately. I have

just recovered from a serious medical problem, which happened because a

mistake was made during minor surgery. That's a long story that I won't go

into.

In order to regain my health, I read everything I could find about being on

a vegan diet and finally decided that maybe I would benefit by fish oil

because all of the information I found was confusing. The better brands of

fish oil should be free of toxins. Flax seed oil doesn't have one kind of

fatty acid that we need. It is probably available in vegetarian sources

such as walnuts, primrose oil, etc. but I thought the information was too

confusing.

I am on my way to a full recovery. I don't know if I needed the fish oil

or not. I plan to give it up in a few months unless I develop further

problems. One article I read said that we are all different and that some

people require fish in their diet, but others do not.

To me good health is a blessing and I'm willing to do what it takes to have

my health. The other thing I worry about is osteoporosis. So far haven't

been able to find anything that suggests a vegan diet causes causes

osteoporosis.

Re:The Scoop on Salmon

You know what? I am SO sick of this. *tossing temper tantrum* I can't

win!!! I just can't win!!! I've been using fish and fish oils to control my

mood disorder for a few months and it works better than any of the rx meds

I've ever taken. But there's all the crap in the fish to worry about, not

to mention that my daughter is starting to ask when I'm going to stop with

this experiment and go back to being vegetarian. And the guilt doesn't

make it any easier to choke down the stuff! I just can't win :(

Yes, and I'm taking some of that, too, but if I take too many pills, I start

gagging. The only way I've been able to get enough is to do part capsules (also

not vegetarian) *and* fish. :(

At the point, it looks like I'm going to be on this for life. My question now

is whether I should make my kids eat it or not :(

Hello Rebecca -

If only it was that simple... Bipolar disorder is so far beyond regular or

situational 'mood swings' that the sensible approach you suggested is

unfortunately, impossible.

I think a lot of people don't realize how serious mental disorders can be

and that their effects are far more far-reaching than mental. The physical

has *so much* effect on how our brains function. My husband suffers from

generalized anxiety disorder and is prone to depression. It's only recently

that we've discovered his diet has a direct impact on his

brain--specifically, he has some type of hypoglycemia and one of his major

symptoms is anxiety attacks.

Sadly, we've discovered that he *cannot* manage this on a soy-free (I'm

severely allergic) vegetarian diet. It's truly impossible. For whatever

reasons, he needs flesh to manage his blood sugar. He doesn't like to be

limited like this, but we both recognize that keeping his health and mind

stable are of utmost importance.

I'm still vegetarian. Our shared meals are vegetarian (and often vegan, but

I'm not vegan). He chooses and cooks his own meat.

Oddly enough, for other metabolic reasons, I *cannot* consume meat without

severe physical consequences. Fortunately, I don't *mind* being vegetarian

and prefer to be this way.

Some folks might choose to be less healthy, but I'm disabled and cannot work

and we rely on his income. He chooses to follow the healthiest path *for

him* and tries his best to deal with the ethical dilemmas.

I don't fault *anyone* for choosing the healthiest path for themselves.

Indeed, I think it takes a strong person to realize that their diet is

having a negative impact on their health and to make the change which will

benefit them the most. If that means giving up meat or giving up veganism,

it's still a hard choice to make.

That's another thing. I've never been DIAGNOSED hypoglycemic (no one was

willing to test), but I've got all the symptoms). Since starting to eat the

fish, I've noticed that I'm much more able to keep my moods on an even keel.

That's one of the reasons that I'm hesitating to exclusively use the

supplements. I don't think that it's necessarily enough of a reason to stop

being vegetarian, but let's be realistic... salmon are still dying to go into

the capsules, too. If eating fish, rather than caps, deals with two of my

problems in stead of just one, it seems foolish to only take the caps in order

to feel less guilty by pretending I'm not killing fish.

But I'm having an awful lot of trouble with deciding what to do about my kids.

The four year old knows fish is off limits, the baby doesn't know one way or

another. I've got mental illness issues on *BOTH* sides of their family to deal

with, and to be honest, I don't think I'm doing the right thing by raising them

veg if it's helping me this much. Why should I wait until they're a wreck when

I can be preventing the illness to start with? But I don't know what to do.

It's making me miserable.

I am a member of a mental health clubhouse. Apparently wheat gluten sets of

Schizoprenia episodes. I was suspicious, but I've had it confirmed from a

psychiatrist.

My step son had chronic hypoglycemia and attention deficit that was directly

related to his severe food allergies.

Food isn't just nutrition, it's medicine.

Or poison if your body is allergy or intolerant of it. My children are all

severely allergic to gluten and dairy products and part of their symptoms were

ADHD-like as well.

My husband is also severely allergic to dairy and gluten but refuses to give

them up. Right now he is lying in bed moaning because he ate pizza for lunch

with someone. It was a buffet and he took advantage of it too - smile. He's a

grown-up though, and now he has to head out to fire practise (he's a volunteer

fireman) and he feels the pits. Nothing I could say would have dissuaded him

either.

And the doctor says he doesn't think Keith has a problem with impulse control -

lol.
