BiPolar Disorder

People who have not delt with it really don't understand. The families and

individuals who deal with it every day know there is nothing simple about it. My

pregnant granddaughter cannot take her medication and it is worse than any

hormone rage you can image.

There was a movie the other day about a woman who chose to have a baby, knowing

what would happen when she went off her Lithium, she had to be institutionalized

during her pregnancy because of her VIOLENT mood swings. My ex-husband tried to

kill my oldest son when he was on one of his rampages, another time he tried to

run me down with a Blazer; he bogged down in the sand. Other times he was sooo

imaginative and sweet, then there were the down swings when he couldn't function

at all.

I think a lot of people don't realize how serious mental disorders can be

and that their effects are far more far-reaching than mental. The physical

has *so much* effect on how our brains function. My husband suffers from

generalized anxiety disorder and is prone to depression. It's only recently

that we've discovered his diet has a direct impact on his

brain--specifically, he has some type of hypoglycemia and one of his major

symptoms is anxiety attacks.

Sadly, we've discovered that he *cannot* manage this on a soy-free (I'm

severely allergic) vegetarian diet. It's truly impossible. For whatever

reasons, he needs flesh to manage his blood sugar. He doesn't like to be

limited like this, but we both recognize that keeping his health and mind

stable are of utmost importance.

I'm still vegetarian. Our shared meals are vegetarian (and often vegan, but

I'm not vegan). He chooses and cooks his own meat.

Oddly enough, for other metabolic reasons, I *cannot* consume meat without

severe physical consequences. Fortunately, I don't *mind* being vegetarian

and prefer to be this way.

Some folks might choose to be less healthy, but I'm disabled and cannot work

and we rely on his income. He chooses to follow the healthiest path *for

him* and tries his best to deal with the ethical dilemmas.

I don't fault *anyone* for choosing the healthiest path for themselves.

Indeed, I think it takes a strong person to realize that their diet is

having a negative impact on their health and to make the change which will

benefit them the most. If that means giving up meat or giving up veganism,

it's still a hard choice to make.

My husband was diagnosed BiPolar 13 years ago. I know what you are talking

about.

While it is not a cure, is your grand-daughter taking extra b vitamins. B6 is

particularly helpful in mood control, but with the exception of niacin (b3)

which is useful in cholestrol control, my research shows the b complex should

always be taken in combination.

Jamieson happens to make a great time released b100. Keith is much better if he

takes 200 - 300 mg per day as recommended by Dr. Lendon Smith in the early 80s.

New research into schizophrenia is also showing that b complex helps with

mediating schizophrenia in many female patients.

What about fish oils, is your grand-daughter taking those too?

My granddaughter is in the last weeks of a pregnancy that has been rocky to say

the least.

They are living on next to nothing + food stamps & Medicaid. She may be induced

in the next few days and then she can go back to Zoloft which works for her and

which Medicaid will pay for. Neither of us are in any position to buy

supplements, I wish we were.

That's sad Sylvia, but hopefully she has been able to receive prenatal vitamins.

Here with Pop, or pregnancy outreach programs which will provide these free of

charge and many physicians also keep " samples " that they give to patients.

Would she consider asking her primary are physician to give her some b vitamin

shots?

The state will only fund 'standard' obstetrical care. Once she is a nursing

mother, they will ease up a bit.

Be careful with prenatal vitamins. They are high in iron and if not asimulated

well, they cause toxic effects and cause dark skin spots which are very hard to

get rid of.

The whole thing is moot as this is an any day thing now.

She could not tolerate the prenatals anyway. They made her throw up. They gave

me diarrhea
