Just a reminder to SBVS listserve users and rs:

The South Bay Vegetarian Society (aka, )listserve is

for use by rs for promoting VEGETARIAN-RELATED EVENTS AND

ACTIVITIES that are sanctioned by the SOUTH BAY VEGETARIAN SOCIETY.

Recently, the SBVS listserve has been hit with a " spate of (non-

vegetarian) spam " (if you will excuse the pun!) that has ranged from

controversial issues like the middle east conflict to individuals who

are promoting their personal parties, singles groups, and in one

instance--organizations that are in direct opposition to the goals of

vegetarianism (such as Heifer International--a group which many

vegetarians have deservedly so 'renamed' as " HEINOUS International " )!

Any such use of the SBVS listserve constitutes misuse of the SBVS

listserve. Persons who abuse this policy will be removed and barred

from using the SBVS listserve. In some cases, certain individuals

have engaged in multiple attempts to post non-vegetarian related

events to the SBVS listserve, and consequently, have been reported to

for follow-up and prospective disciplinary action.

The SBVS listserve is a means by which vegetarians can communicate

with other vegetarians to promote vegetarianism and vegetarian events

to members of the vegetarian community. Abuse of the listserve hurts

all of us since it disrupts our ability to disseminate significant

vegetarian-related information to the vegetarian community at-large.

If you ever have doubt about whether you should post a message to the

listserve, then please first check with the SBVS Moderators--Dave

Pearl (tantraguy2002) or Phil Becker (beckerhead).

Regarding events--unless an event has been cleared by the SBVS

Steering Committee at a SBVS Planning Committee meeting or via a

communication with a member of the SBVS Planning Committee, then it

should NOT be posted on the listserve as an officially sanctioned

event of the SBVS. Please note that this policy applies exclusively

to SBVS events.

Please do your part to help keep the SBVS listserve as an effective

tool for communication among the vegetarian community in the South

Bay and surrounding area.

Thank you for your cooperation.

It isn't as if this list has been 'flooded' with off-topic subjects;

and the ones that are posted whether veg related or not, seem to

quickly pass by with little or no discussion.

And the idea that people can't post their personal parties, etc,

seems more than a little rightwing controlling to me.

What's next, grade the events as to whether they are kinda veggie or 'real

vegan'

or if they don't pass muster according to your personal whimsy??

This is a resource, that's all. Nothing sacred.

You seem a little heavy handed with this, in my opinion.

Too controlling and you risk alienating the very people who

form the audience you are trying to reach.

For what it's worth, both members have a point. The list is simply a

resource to be used, I hope, by its veggie members. Bumping non veggie

related spam off the list is one thing I'd support. However, bumping veggie

members for contacting other veggies about non SBVS activities is a bit much

and deserves more discussion. IMHO, this is one of the reasons for building

a veggie community, and I'll bet we all seek that.

With all due respect, this is the South Bay Vegetarian Societies

list, and not some generic veggie mailing list. I think it's up to

them what the rules are.

I do hope they leave other local non-profit veggie groups post

announcements to the list w/o jumping thru hoops, but again it's

their list and their rules.

I for one get tired of people trying to make a quick buck of local

veggie folk and using free resource such as this to do it.

As for spam to the list, what people don't realize is that it's a

lot of hard work managing these lists and I'm sure the admins of

this list work hard behind to scenes to catch all sorts stuff that

shouldn't be on the list.

I run a few other Group mailing lists and you'd not believe

the trash and porn that people try to send. Just because we don't

see it on the list, doesn't mean it's not happening.

In closing, if people are unhappy how things are run you're always

free to go and start your own veggie mailing list and social club.

I'm sure you'll soon realize how much work it is.

Keep up the good work Phil.

Take care

Chris

Since you took the time to write this, I am taking my time to say: I

disagree completely and I support Phil. The " what's next " line is a typical

line of people without common sense. The world is not black and white -

just because you have some censorship does not mean everything will be

censored. I don't see any reason to doubt that Phil has common sense.

Posting irrelevant junk on the Internet slows it down and wastes people's

time. It's wrong, plain and simple. There is no need to argue about it,

and I won't, it's just common sense.
