Guest guest
As to the question of why we are having this discussion -- I am interested in knowing where in the South Bay Area I can get vegetarian food. I am NOT a vegan, I am a lacto-vegetarian. For my brand of vegetarianism, the BK Veggie without mayonnaise appears to be acceptable. For occasional consumption, at least. As to those who are expressing concern about common salt, sugar, or sodium bicarbonate: I'm not saying you are wrong, I just haven't made any decision to avoid these. -- Mike INFO @ Vibrant Life [VLinfo] Wednesday, March 09, 2005 1:14 PM RE: Re: Mayonnaise in Burger King's BK Veggie? Am I the only one who wonders why we are even having this discussion? Regardless of whether this sandwich is vegan, it is still a health and environmental disaster! Also, this sandwich can absolutely NEVER be vegan, regardless of the ingredient list. The thing contains salt, and standard commercial salt (NaCl) is NEVER vegan, it contains animal byproducts to keep it from clumping. Why not just eat things that actually come directly from plants? Just a thought... Sage, Mike [mike.sage] Wednesday, March 09, 2005 1:01 PM Re: Mayonnaise in Burger King's BK Veggie? Here's what I have found out. The BK Veggie does, by default, have reduced-fat mayonnaise of which egg whites are an ingredient. As Jason Wold suggested, one can order it with no mayonnaise. I did that at lunchtime today. The words " NO MAYO " were printed on my receipt, and my BK Veggie was prepared without any mayonnaise. It tasted good. Here are the ingredients of the patty, the bun, and the mayonnaise of the BK Veggie (info from http://www.vegparadise.com/news15.html). I see " egg " in the listing for the mayonnaise, but not in the listings for the patty or the bun. Ingredient Listing for Patty: WATER, MUSHROOMS, WATER CHESTNUTS, COOKED BROWN RICE, TEXTURED WHEAT PROTEIN, ROLLED OATS, VITAL WHEAT GLUTEN, FROZEN ONIONS, CORN OIL, FROZEN CARROTS, POTATO STARCH, FROZEN GREEN PEPPERS, FROZEN RED PEPPERS, 2% OR LESS OF ONION POWDER, CORN STARCH, BLACK OLIVES, METHYLCELLULOSE, SALT, MODIFIED TAPIOCA STARCH, RICE FLOUR, YEAST EXTRACT, OAT FIBER, SUGAR, POTATO DEXTRIN, KONJAC FLOUR, GARLIC POWDER, BLACK PEPPER, MALTODEXTRIN, NATURAL FLAVORS FROM NON-MEAT SOURCES, DEXTROSE, SODIUM BICARBONATE, SODIUM ACID PYROPHOSPHATE, HYDROLYZED CORN GLUTEN, MALT EXTRACT, SAGE, GRILL FLAVOR, BASIL, RAISIN JUICE CONCENTRATE, OREGANO, JALAPENO PEPPER POWDER, SESAME OIL, MODIFIED CORN STARCH, CORN SYRUP SOLIDS, NATURAL SMOKE FLAVORING, CELERY OLEORESIN, WINE, CITRIC ACID, CARAMEL COLOR, AND XANTHAN GUM. Ingredient Listing for 4 " Bun: ENRICHED FLOUR (NIACIN, IRON, THIAMINE MONONITRATE, RIBOBLAVIN, AND FOLIC ACID), WATER, SUGAR, (SUCROSE OR HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP), VEGETABLE SHORTENING, YEAST, SALT, WHEAT GLUTEN, SESAME SEEDS, NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL BUTTER FLAVOR, YEAST FOOD (CALCIUM SULFATE, POTASSIUM IODATE, AND/OR AMMONIUM SULFATE) DOUGH CONDITIONERS (POLYSORBATE 60, CALCIUM PEROXIDE {OXIDANT}, CALCIUM SALTS, SULFATES, PHOSPHATES, AND AMMONIUM SALTS), DOUGH STRENGTHENERS (SODIUM AND/OR CALCIUM-2-STEAROYL LACTYLATE OR ETHOXYLATED MONO- AND DIGLYCERIDES), DOUGH SOFTENERS ( MONO- AND DIGLYCERIDES, AND/OR PROTEASE ENZYME), MOLD INHIBITOR (CALCIUM PROPIONATE), PRESERVATIVE (POTASSIUM SORBATE), OXIDATION REDUCTION ADDITIVES (ASCORBIC ACID, POTASSIUM/CALCIUM IODATE, ALPHA-AMYLASE, AZODICARBONAMIDE), LEAVENING AGENT (MONOCALCIUM PHOSPHATE). Ingredient Listing for Reduced-Fat Mayonnaise: WATER, SOYBEAN OIL, CORN SYRUP, EGG WHITES, DISTILLED VINEGAR, MODIFIED FOOD STARCH, SALT, SUGAR, SPICE, XANTHAN GUM, MUSTARD FLOUR, SODIUM BENZOATE AND POTASSIUM SORBATE AS PRESERVATIVES, LEMON JUICE, POLYSORBATE 60, CALCIUM DISODIUM EDTA TO PROTECT FLAVOR, OLEORESIN PAPRIKA, SODIUM CITRATE, ANNATTO COLOR, MONO AND DIGLYCERIDES. Because of the dairy component of the bun, http://www.veg.ca/directory/fastfood.html advises " If you are vegan ask for the 'specialty bun'. PETA talked about this quite extensively and recommended for buying these, even with your concerns. If no one ever buys them then they will be seen as a market failure and no fast food companies will ever attempt to cater to vegans in the future. That said, I'd probably just be happier if fast food companies went away altogether but I doubt that is going to ever happen. I've only ever eaten one, as a last resort, when there was no reasonable alternative and I didn't much care for it. The fundamental question is, is vegan fast-food even a reasonable goal?
