Guest guest
Thank goodness for that. So long as this stays just between you me and a couple of hundred assorted lurkers I'll admit to 48. Not in very good nick though as I've been on chemo twice recently for breast cancer. Set myself the target of getting back on a surfboard by next summer. I used to crack jokes about nailing my walking frame onto one - never thought it might actually come to that. Was veggie, went vegan about a year ago. LOVE IT! wish I'd done it years ago. Never heard of Ehretist. Just googled it and it looks quite interesting. Not many results though. Any site you'd recommend? I'm really into healing foods for obvious reasons. I eat virtually nothing but fruit and veg with a bit of carbo and protein from nuts and soya. What I want to know is why am I getting podgy? How can anybody possibly put on weight on three tons of veg a day? rosanne > Oh come on, Rosanne ... > fess up on your age. I'm 55 and proud of it. Guest guest
Hi Rosanne, two things that can cause weight gain when eating fruits and vegies ... fat and salt. I'm not talking about what is in the fruit and vegies, but what is added to it. Another thing ... I used to eat corn and potatoes. Right ... up goes my weight. Also don't add any fat or oil to what you eat ... that'll make the weight go up too. And grains are good for weight gain. So I eat only fruit and vegies ... no salt, no fat, no sugar and no grains. I've been doing this for about a year ... was 100% raw before that. Now I steam a bowl of vegies for supper, everything else I eat is whole and uncooked. And for the amount of food I eat, my weight remains steady at 138 lbs. (I'm 5/6"). I'm 55 and the wife, Gala, is 62. She had breast cancer about 6 years ago ... whole left side taken off. Yesterday, she went back thinking the cancer came back. Thank goodness, the tests all came back negative. I'm still trying to get her to go vegan, but no luck. She was eating yoghurt tonight ... the real McCoy with "milk" in it. I give up ... In health ... Werner. ---- Thank goodness for that. Guest guest
Hi Werner, Are you UK. I'm into breast cancer prevention and support. Run a group for angry women in Uk on bcActionUK it's gone a bit quiet recently so could do with some new members. Any woman who cares should join the Womens Environmental Network on http://www.wen.org.uk New report due soon on cosmetics. Tackles environment from womens point of view, sanpro, nappies, food and things you don't want to know about. Poor Gala. I really feel for her. Give her my best wishes. It's so scary living with the constant threat. Why not buy Gala a copy of Your Life in Your Hands by Pro. Jane Plant. The arguments are just plain common sense and I went vegan the night I read it. Lots of really good facts from a respected earth scientist on plastics, oestrogen pollution in water, dairy poisons. Vegan message is played down but is there - too hard core for average women. Thanks for suggestions re weight - but some oils are essential for health? what about protein, nuts? > Hi Rosanne, > two things that can cause weight gain when eating fruits and vegies .... fat > and salt. Guest guest
Hi Rosanne, sorry, but I'm here in the States. I live in Dekalb, Illinois ... which is about 60 miles west of Chicago. I'll look for that book tonight and get it for Gala. No concentrated fats or oils are essential. However, fatty acids are and they are in most fruits and vegies. Same for protein ... most people get way too much protein ... which creates an acid condition in the body and it uses bone calcium to neutralize it. What you really need is amino acids ... again from fruits and vegies and the body will make it's own protein. You don't see cows or horses eat fat or protein ... just plant matter and they grow up to be big and strong. When I was a raw food person, I was told to eat nuts, but then they would say to eat only a very small amount. The last time I ate a handful of nuts, the whole inside of my mouth felt like it was on fire and took a couple of weeks to heal. So if you can eat nuts ... fine, but still only eat them sparingly. I am very active physically at about 14% body fat. Been that way for about a year now. If I would go back to eating corn and potatoes, then I probably would be fat from too much starchy food. So I just stick to fruits and my salad and steamed vegies and I feel great. This also seems to help my Spiritual Life too. In Health ... Werner. ---- Hi Werner,Are you UK. Poor Gala. Guest guest
Because breast cancer rates have gone up from 1 in 20 to 1 in 9 in my lifetime.Because survival rates from BC are lower in the UK than virtually any other civilised country. Because if you live in the wrong area of the UK you are twice as likely to die. Because there are UK clusters which are not being publicised. ( I agree with this as releasing the info would cause immense distress but the causes must be dealt with) Because most breast cancer could be avoided. In China, where rates are really low, it's called rich womans disease. The medical profession and drug industry pours a fortune into finding magic bullets but nothing much happens about prevention. Most breast cancers have hormone receptors that signal them to grow - we overdose on hormones from environmental pollution, plastic contamination, farming methods, animals bred for extreme lactation... Prevention just isn't glamorous, nobody will make a fortune from it. But there is a groundswell of women reading books like Jane Plant and getting very angry indeed about milk and dairy crap, oestrogens in water, xeno oestrogens food packaging, hormone disruptors in make up, cleaning materials, sanpro. http://www.wen.org.uk When you start looking for reasons for the rise in bc rates, they are legion. Plus male prostate cancer, infertility... I reckon there is a Rachel Carson type explosion on the way. Loads of women with bc are going vegan. Oh yeah, and virtually all commercially available non organic chocolate contains traces of lindane which is a serious hormone disruptor. The only safe chocolate is organic. Guest guest
Hi Rosanne I read Jane Plant's story which was fascinating. She worked everything out herself and has now come up with her own diet (practically vegan). I think its awful though that the *clusters* are not being publicised. Frightening! Guest guest
Rosanne Thanks. I get so angry at the whole establishment/big business type of propaganda running the world with no care for the health and well-being of people, that I hadn't thought of being angry in regard to one specific health problem. It sounds like you do a good job of getting information to people. I remember that when it was suggested that people with breast cancer give up eating protein (i.e. meat, beans etc) for a while and live on vegetables and fruit so that their bodies could heal themselves, there was such a backlash from the medical establishment saying there would be no reason for it to work. I think there is so little information given out by the authorities in the UK on how to avoid cancers. I suppose this is because the truth would hurt the profits of the multinationals making all their money from the harmful 'foods'. Anyway - thanks again for the explanation. Jo > Because breast cancer rates have gone up from 1 in 20 to 1 in 9 in my > lifetime.Because survival rates from BC are lower in the UK than > virtually any other civilised country. Guest guest
Apparently if you have children, extended breastfeeding not only is good for them but protects the mother by decreasing her chance of getting breast cancer. Also the pro-choice lobby did their darndest to suppress research which showed a link between induced abortion (I seem to recall that the risk was greatest if it was the abortion of a first pregnancy) and breast cancer, even though the researcher was herself pro-choice on abortion, she believed in informed choices on the risks of abortion, and found surprise surprise that pro-lifers were happy for her results to be widely known but pro-choicers were not!! Many pro-choicers still deny the link. Guest guest
Hi Lesley Angry women on breast cancer lists are v angry about this press release - the breastfeeding connection has been accepted for ages and most of the bc women I chat too did breast feed - and for a long time. Yes, breast feeding is best, nobody argues with that but they feel this is attempting to blame women themselves for breast cancer and deflecting interest from the far more serious causes of environmental damage and crud food. They feel used by the breast feeding lobby in a very hurtful way. If I was advising the dairy industry on how to combat the growing anti dairy movement within bc circles, I would advise them not to argue back which focuses attention on the issues, but to send out (or fund) press releases on every other aspect of bc to deflect attention, confuse and bore the public.. This is not paranoia (I do take my B12 (sometimes)) but exactly the sort of strategic PR planning that I've been involved in in the past. Not I hasten to add for any issue or product I didn't feel right about. Go and count the sq foot of soy milk, soy spreads, and dairy free goods on the supermarket shelves. Note the soy magazine ads, soy tv ads and the new supermarket free from ranges and sections. There is a big change afoot. Jane, glad you read Plant. She does actually say that vegan is best but that she doesn't want to scare women off. Most women who act on JP's advice seem to be veggies or demi veggies so cutting out dairy makes them almsot dietary vegans. I just wish she was a better writer with more gravitas like Rachel Carson. It's so easy to pick holes in her book but it is an astounding eye opener. My daughter thought I was being a bit silly but then had a lecture at uni about Plants other environmental work. She is very respected in academic circles. rosanne > Apparently if you have children, extended breastfeeding not only is good for > them but protects the mother by decreasing her chance of getting breast > cancer. .. > > Lesley

Guest guest
B " H Sigh! Wish I actually had a child (and a husband!). I spend a lot of time with my nieces (My sister has 7 girls). My little sweet one, my sister's 4 1/2 year old, came to synagogue yesterday and climbed onto my lap. I was holding her during the Amidah (a silent prayer said standing with both feet, and legs, together) and most of the services after, until Adon Olam (the final song -- in our synagogue, the children get up in front of the synagogue and the Rabbi leads them in Adom Olam). Didn't get to see my littlest sweet one yesterday, though. Anyway, count your blessings. Not everyone has the opportunity to even try to have children at any age...... Guest guest
I still fear I am at risk of some sort of cancer because of the amount of my mother's tobacco smoke I was exposed to as a child, thankfully I always avoid smoke now, I just stick to a zero tolerance attitude to it and refuse to go anywhere where anyone is smoking, and I've taken to telling people off if I catch them smoking in no smoking areas, it shows them up! But you still never know when cancer can strike from poisons from long ago. You said there was no link between smoking and breast cancer, personally I doubt that, how can you be sure of there being no link (and I mean 100% sure) between breast cancer and tobacco smoke as one of the environmental second hand poisons inflicted on many people including kids? It causes enough other diseases. I'm VERY angry about the parental smoking epidemic, and chest diseases caused by this, it is so frustrating when smoking parents on the other list obviously don't care about the legacy of lung damage that their kids will definitely have to live with. There is no debate about this, I know it causes long term lung problems, because of what I live with every day. I consider all this even more preventable than breast cancer. I'm angry, I understand your anger about what has affected you and that prevention is not mentioned enough, but I am more angry that tough preventative action is not taken to protect children like the child that I was, struggling to breathe a lot of the time in a smoky atmosphere. I still have problems now with my lungs 20 years after leaving my parents' toxic home. I was hospitalised overnight in my last pregnancy because I was having breathing problems caused by exposure to a smoking taxi driver, and I am angry still that the hospital staff were useless! They seemed to have no idea what to do, I was getting more and more congested and struggling to get my breath and they didn't even give me oxygen or ventolin or do anything useful. I was left to struggle all night, sitting up to breathe, but was a lot better by the morning when I was finally seen by a doctor. I had coughed up phlegm all night and cleared my chest a lot, somehow fought my way through it. If I had given up and lay down and died only then they might have accepted I was asthmatic, but because I had got through this somehow, the doctor said I was not showing any sign of asthma! I said to her, "you would not say that if you saw me when I was at my worst". I told her I thought she was wrong. It was a very traumatic experience and I really thought I would die. I think we have to fight tobacco first if we have health concerns, it causes far more problems than dairy to people's health, although on purely ethical grounds I would definitely fight dairy. I'm pro-breast feeding but only if the mother is a non-smoker, I wish my mum hadn't breastfed me as she was forcing her poisons even more onto me that way. My kids were/are breastfed. Lesley rzanuk [rzanuk]21 July 2002 23:49 Subject: Re: other old vegetarians ...Hi LesleyAngry women on breast cancer lists are v angry about this pressrelease - the breastfeeding connection has been accepted for ages and most of the bc women I chat too did breast feed - and for a long time.Yes, breast feeding is best, nobody argues with that but they feelthis is attempting to blame women themselves for breast cancer and deflecting interest from the far more serious causes of environmental damage and crud food. They feel used by the breast feeding lobby in a very hurtful way. If I was advising the dairy industry on how to combat the growinganti dairy movement within bc circles, I would advise them not toargueback which focuses attention on the issues, but to send out (or fund)press releases on every other aspect of bc to deflect attention, confuse and bore the public..This is not paranoia (I do take my B12 (sometimes)) but exactly the sort of strategic PR planning that I've been involved in in the past. Not I hasten to add for any issue or product I didn't feel rightabout. Go and count the sq foot of soy milk, soy spreads, and dairy freegoods on the supermarket shelves. Note the soy magazine ads, soy tvads and the new supermarket free from ranges and sections. There is a big change afoot.Jane, glad you read Plant. She does actually say that vegan is best but that she doesn't want to scare women off. Most women who act on JP's advice seem to be veggies or demi veggies so cutting outdairy makes them almsot dietary vegans. I just wish she was a better writer with more gravitas like Rachel Carson. It's so easy to pick holes in her book but it is an astounding eye opener. My daughter thought I was being a bit silly but then had a lecture at uni about Plants other environmental work. She is very respected in academic circles.rosanne > Apparently if you have children, extended breastfeeding not only isgood for> them but protects the mother by decreasing her chance of gettingbreast> cancer..> > LesleyTo send an email to -
Guest guest
Hi Lesley > I still fear I am at risk of some sort of cancer because of the amount of my mother's tobacco smoke I was exposed to as a child, I believe the most up to date research shows that the chances of of getting a smoking-related-cancer after 20 years of non-exposure are no higher than if you had never been exposed - so I'd guess that your chances of getting cancer are no worse than any other non-smokers. > You said there was no link between smoking and breast cancer, personally I doubt that, My view is that if you are taking a poison into your body, it has an effect of reducing your immunity and your health in general. Therefore, to some extent, smoking is bound to have an effect on whether you are likely to contract any disease.
