Guest guest
B " H Though I have to admit, most people think my Mom (who is with me in spirit, but can't give up her meat.... even the dropping of red meat after her minor heart attack early last year didn't stick....) is at least 10-15 years younger than she is, I love the reactions I get when I tell people I'm 47. I have old driver's licenses and the only difference is that I'm thinner now (in the 25 years I've been vegetarian, I've lost about 80 or so pounds though I might have gained some muscle since I started kickboxing a bit over a year ago). Someone who's known me for probably 10 or so years recently wanted to fix me up with someone -- I asked her how old he was (I go for younger men, but I had a feeling he was a bit TOO young) and she said, " Oh, I doubt he's over 32.... " (thinking, the way she said it I could tell, that I was afraid he'd be too old). I chuckled and said that I really don't mind the age difference, but I doubt he'd want to go out with someone 15 years older... She had no idea ;-) Debbie Well if it's any consolation, in that picture of you on your profile you still look quite young. 20's-ish. I have a theory that vegetarianism drastically slows the ageing process. I had my hair cut recently by a woman who was one year my senior. We looked at *least* 10 years apart! And my best friend (we became veggie together when we were freshman in high school) looks really young, too. Just a thought... -- jojo
Guest guest
Wow Debbie! That is a real compliment for someone to think you are 15 years younger than you really are!!! Your veggie diet and kickboxing obviously suit you!!! :-) Love, Janey x > B " H > Someone who's known me for probably 10 or so years recently wanted to > fix me up with someone -- I asked her how old he was (I go for > younger men, but I had a feeling he was a bit TOO young) and she > said, " Oh, I doubt he's over 32.... Guest guest
B " H Actually, though I've lost a lot of weight in the 25 years I've been vegetarian (I was really fat back then) I still need to lose about 25- 30 more pounds (I actually was down there about 5 or so years ago for about a year or so when I gave up sugar and fruit but gained about 40 or so pounds back when I put the fruit back in). My nutritionist/chiropractor has some stuff to help me lose more weight, but just after we started with it, I started having some problems with me thumbs that he needed to work on, then I sprained my ankle... anyway, at some point, I hope to get back to that. To my point.... one of the things he told me (mind you, he's not a vegan nutritionist, but he knows that I'll never go to eating meat or even dairy and eggs, so he works with that) is that there is a specific protein that vegans can only get from nuts (and nut butters) -- I started adding them, but I'm still waiting for some specifics on amounts.... Anyway............ just my two cents.... Debbie Well they do call it a beer belly when men get a belly as they get older, so I thought it was the beer, and I know you like beer. Guest guest
Hi Fraggle, forget about that crap of "as we age, metabolism drops". It all depends on what you eat. At age 55 and 5"6", I weigh a steady 139 lbs. I eat only fruits and vegies ... no fat, no salt, no sugar and no grains. And I eat a huge volumn of food. My salad comes in a punch bowl and my steamed veggies come in a two quart bowl. And I eat nothing but fruits in the mean time. I found that things like corn or potatoes are good for weight gain. So are bananas, which I eat only in the Winter, since they are to heavy for this hot weather. Now is the season for watermelons and berries. I also eat lots of grapes and cherries. Remember ... fat makes you fat. And that includes oils which are added to salads and other foods. I get a belly too after eating my monster salad, but it's gone a couple of hours later ... In health .... Werner. ---- ok...sooo unfair..i gained weight when i went veggiei weighed 119 lbs in 1989....add a few pounds to that today..like 40...grrrrrrrand where this belly thing come from? i didn't sign up fer this..granted, i know, as we age, metabolism drops like a stone, but i didn't think i'd feel like i was eating stones...gained 20 lbs last yr...*sobs into paws*fraggle*pats belly*

Guest guest
Fraggle I have to agree with you. Personally I think that oil is a bit of a necessity in small amounts. I personally do no feel that just vegetables and fruit, with no seeds or nuts, is a good long-term diet. I do agree with Werner that we could cut down on the oil though. Glad I don't drink beer - goodness knows what size I'd be. Guest guest
Yeast is a fungus, not like an animal, but some wines and beers use fish derivatives or blood, or other animal products in the finings to remove cloudy bits, so they are not all vegan.
