Guest guest
I went to my hometown this weekend to visit my parents. On the way into town, my husband pointed to a Taco Bell sign that said " Vegetarians love our 7 layer burritos " . I know that this is something with cheese in it, but at least it's a start. A few years ago when I was in highschool and vegetarian, people acted like I had a highly deadly, easily spread disease if I talked about the way I ate. I NEVER met another vegetarian in my hometown. I think this seems to be progress. Really, I think there are some people in that town that do not know what the word means. And I know my own grandparents don't understand the word vegan. I hope this means that a few more people are learning and thinking about what they eat. Hopefully.... Hannah
Guest guest
Wait...don't the 7-layer burritos have beef as one of the layers? But I guess there's enough stuff in them that you could take out the beef, cheese, and sour cream layers and still have a half-decent burrito. I doubt that was what they meant, though! - Muffy - Trusty, Hannah Monday, July 22, 2002 8:56 AM A good 'sign'!?! I went to my hometown this weekend to visit my parents. I used to have a recipe for fat free refried beans. I haven't had them in ages, but I remember them being majorly delicious. I happen to have a weak spot for Mexican food (I love it). When I visit my brother (who lives in Chicago), there are two kosher places that have Mexican food on the menu -- Slice of Life in Skokie (on Dempster) and Jerusalem II on Devon in West Rodgers Park. I was last there January 2001 and I had Mexican food just about every day ;-) (I think 6 of the 7 days I was there -- and I think one day I had Mexican food for lunch and supper ;-) I used to have a great recipe for guacamole -- avocado and silken tofu mostly, with Lemon Juice...... Guest guest
As far as I can find out, Taco Bell does not use lard in any of it's food. Two sites off the top of my head list them as vegan friendly- vegan action http://www.vegan.org and the International Vegetarian Union-in their FAQ http://www.ivu.org/faq/food.html I've also seen this information at other places. I just can't remember right now. Taco Bell has an 800 number for information on their items. Hannah compugraphd 7/23/2002 9:45 AM RE: A good 'sign'!?! Guest guest
I'm trusting the beans for two reasons. First, I've heard other vegans say that they eat the bean burritos (minus the cheese) at taco bell. Second, I checked the label on the taco bell brand refried beans at the supermarket and there was no lard listed. When I asked at the restaurant they said that the beans came pre-refried so they didn't know. I did try to find an ingredient list on their website but had no luck. - Muffy - compugraphd Tuesday, July 23, 2002 8:45 AM RE: A good 'sign'!?! Guest guest
Ugh, yuck. I assumed because the taco bell brand products at the store were ok, the ingredients at the restaurant would be ok. They can't use the animal fat in their store products without putting it on the label, can they? BTW, I thought olestra was that 'faux fat' stuff they came out with a few years back...actually something along the lines of plastic. I had WOW brand chips once and was sick for three days. Guest guest
its not lard, its a stripped fat.. also, i found a box while moving one day, and it was a taco bell box..i belive it was for tortillas, and it had some animal derived ingredient in it....which has now escaped me after all these years fraggle " Trusty, Hannah " <hannah.trusty wrote: > As far as I can find out, Taco Bell does not use lard in any of it's food. Guest guest
olestra/olena was a a fat that was chemically stripped as far as i recall..so, basically you got the flavor, and yer body wouldn't process it... certain taco bells use a similar product to make the beans and other things taste the way they want em to..think mcdonalds french fries... fraggle " James & Muffy Caldwell " <jmc62701 wrote: > Ugh, yuck. Guest guest
>to..think mcdonalds french fries... Yep - they had said they were vegetarian, and it turned out they were pre-part-fried in beef fat before being sent to the outlets. At least the Hindues took them to court. I certainly wouldn't trust them. Jo --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). Guest guest
B " H Yes, olestra is just another example of the lengths people will go to to avoid changing their diet when they should ;-) My Mom tells a story from before I was born -- the women in her family were always trying to lose weight (her mother and her aunts -- they all lived in one brownstone). Anyway, one of them got a calorie book that said that mineral oil had 0 calories, so they all started frying things in mineral oil.... Well, I don't know if you all know, but mineral oil is a laxative.... I hope I don't need to go any further ;-) Anyway, this is what olestra reminded me of, only mineral oil is more natural.... ;-) Debbie Ugh, yuck.
