beer brewed by standard german law is not only vegan but clean. germans

are very anal about their " reinheitsgebot " which has been used for as

long as beer exists there (and hey... u know germany and it's beer). i

can't say the same for american booze though... i haven't checked the

specifics but a lot of beers here *supposedly* aren't really vegan.

for wine... that's another tough one. as i said, i don't know any brands

in particular but *i have heard* that many aren't vegan. i guess nobody

has really done the research yet... or maybe companies try to keep it

from us.

so... think what you wanna... and drink if you wanna. but in

moderation... vegan or not... alcohol is still not good in excess.

btw... yeast are funghi.

i am really some day get a stock reply fer this topic..really...i swear..

and no, i'm not complainin to you sara..this just happens to come up every month

or so

one..the reinheitsgebot isn't as grand as it once was..the german purity law was

shunted aside a number of years ago, thanx to budweiser and the EU..so, you

can't use " its german, its vegan " excuse anymore

ok..Most beers are fine, except those processed with isinglass, which is fish

bladder...this is mostly an english thing..it is used in traditional cask

conditioned beers..

in maerica, very few brewers use isinglas, only a few microbreweries that try

fer the traditional english style ales..

most american breweries filter their beers with

a. DE filters(diatamaceous earth..)(sic)

b force filtered thru plastic

even budweiser..ya know how it sez " beechwood " aged? its marketing..the

beechwood is used to help fine the proteins and yeasts out..it stays on the

beechwood strips fer like a day, and they add no flavor, thats why they use

beechwood, its pretty neutral...

the best thing to do, ASK..breweries fall all over themselves to talk about

their beer..they would be more then happy to discuss wot malts, yeast, wot the

pH of the water is..and steerin it toward finings is simple enough

wine...wine is different depending where you are..once again, gelatin and

isinglass is more used in europe...many american wineries use bentonite..its a

clay...

spirits are fine, unless you get one of those weird snake drinks from asia er

something....

that should about cover it..fer the next few days

:)

cheers

You could do a stock reply Fraggle. Is there an 'information' part on this

list that you could put it in. It would be really helpful.

Actually, I asked in the Pitfield Brewery (a vegan-friendly microbrewery

near where I live), and they said that the Reinheitsgebot didn't rule

out finings (fish bladders).

it does..

if a brewery sez they stand by the reinheitsgebot, then, technically, they can

only use water, hops, barley and yeast(yeast was only added to the law 100 years

ago, cuz before pasteur, they really didn't know much about yeast..), and wheat

if its a hefeweizen..no adulterates can be added...that includes isinglass,

since even if its not actually in the final product, it is added to the beer...

cheers

Yes, and by coincidence I'm supping their 1850 London Porter as I write.

They're about ten minutes from my place. Ridiculously close. And all

their beer is vegan. (Unless they sell it to an indie pub that insists

on fining it.)
