B " H

B'Ezrat Hashem (which means with the help of G-d).

Oh, BTW, it seems someone asked me a while back (I've been really

snowed under lately -- I apologize for not mentioning it earlier) why

I write " G-d " instead of spelling out the generally accepted English

word for the one and only deity. It's a bit complicated and really

sort of unnecessary, but I'll try to explain it the best I can....

When the name of G-d is written out (in its Hebrew forms) in full,

the paper one writes it on cannot, according to Jewish law, be thrown

in the garbage (or even recycling). It has to be buried in a

cemetary. (These papers with G-d's name on them are called " sheimot "

which is Hebrew for " names " -- the area where they are buried are

called a geniza -- often old books and documents are excavated

centuries later and found to be in very good and readable condition)

Because of this, we have developed a method to make it easier to

dispose of these papers -- we use a " nickname " for G-d or leave out a

letter or change a letter. We all know what these " nicknames " mean

(this is often done when special blessings are said in special

settings and people don't know the blessings by heart, so papers are

printed up with G-d's nicknames -- Hashem, used above, BTW, is one of

them and literally means " the name " ). Anyway, while doing this is

unnecessary according to Jewish law for words that describe G-d in

languages other than Hebrew, we generally do this for them anyway. I

have gotten Torah words in Spanish where they write D-os.

BTW, it's really not necessary at all on computers, but I figure I

don't know if anyone will print it out and not know the proper way to

dispose of things, so even on my web site I would write it in

the " nickname " format.

What does B " H mean? I notice it at the start of all your messages.

Erm - which one would that be? Could you possibly narrow it down at least to

the appropriate pantheon?

Hmm, I'm betting you'll be told that you're just splitting hairs and that

actually you both belive in the same thing.

I'm not a betting girl, but I'm hoping that certain people on this list stop picking apart everything that certain other people on this list say. It's getting really old. I started avoiding alt.food.vegan because of the trolls, but this is almost worse...

Why can't we all just get along :)?!!!

As you quoted a message from me should I take it I am a certain

person? Please say if you do, I won't mind.

Personally though I agree with the sentiment of what you said, I just

happened to think that a discussion on the underlaying ethics of why we are

vegans would be both interesting and relevant, instead though I was

insulted so I hope you can understand my feeling bitter about it.

My experience though suggests that this message will also be accused of

picking apart which makes me feel I'm in a position where I will be

chastised for whatever I do so will bother this list no more.

Michael, I was in no way suggesting (or even thinking) that you should leave the list. My point was merely that this was becoming a place where people are growing increasingly hostile. I really didn't wan't to be part of the argument as it was not my argument, but I like all of the people involved in the argument and was not enjoying seeing them go at each other. That is all. I spent part of this weekend with my father's side of the family and watched them tear at each other's hearts like a band of vultures, so I'm a little sensitive about that sort of thing right now...
