Has meat consumption risen a concommitant 10%?

If so, ever stop to think that the Atkins diet is probably just another

meat industry marketing ploy?

Absolutely! And this right on the heels of the mad cow

disease scare. Coincidence? I think not.

I also think the saddest part of this Atkins diet craze is

that it is moving people further away from living a healthy

lifestyle that will benefit not only them, but our whole

planet... while at the same time it also lines the pockets

with gold of the factor farming industry. I recently saw a

report on TV about how the demand for meat products has

so increased that the markets just can't keep up, so of course

the prices are going to go up, folks. I truely have nothing

against folks that still wish to eat meat, but falling for this

meat-marketing clap-trap is just killing Mother Earth.

I think that it has become so popular because people want a good

excuse to continue to eat their meat. People and the meat industry

have gotten tired of hearing about problems with meat consumption,

so they invent this diet (that does work for weight loss) so that

they can increase demand and that gives people the perfect excuse to

continue eating unhealthy amounts of meat.

There's a wonderful book about a similar subject, " Food Fight: The

Inside Story on America's Food Industry ... " Makes several good

points about how marketing dollars can affect what we put into our

mouths.

The end result -- we all make a difference every single day with what

we buy, what we eat, and who we support. As a vegetarian community,

we're doing a small part in the fight against the Big Meat industry.
