Well, my dh and I are ethical vegetarians (making the transition to vegan) not vegetarian for religious reasons. Since we are not religious/superstitious, we don't believe in hell and, therefore, don't believe we'd go there for taking medications in gelatin-capsule form if that's the only way to get it. We figure we wouldn't be ethical anything if we were dead ;=). We also ride, when we take public transport, on tires that contain pig fat, because that's the only way to get there, etc. etc. Life is all about compromises, it seems. However, it is a problem that the pharmaceutical industry hasn't addressed adequately, and it most certainly should. Guest guest
yeah, don't let yourself die or anything because you can't find gelatin free capsules. it is not as if your buying gelatin will lead to killing more animals because i think they take gelatin from the bones or other guts that would just be thrown away. and i guess, if animals " have to " be killed it is better to make as much use out of them as possible. i just don't eat gelatin is because it just grosses me out. I went to whole foods today to see if I could find vegan marshmallows but all they had was ones that were made out of eggs and fish gelatin... bleh. Even vitamins are often made with gel caps and you would think that they would make those veggie friendly since health conscious consumers are presumbably more likely to be vegetarians. You could write the pharmaceutical companies a stern letter. , Sant & Brown <santbrown@l...> wrote: > > > > We could discuss how many medications use gelatin capsules........ > > Usually I avoid them, but I have taken medications with gelatin > > capsules on occasion. > > Well, my dh and I are ethical vegetarians (making the transition to > vegan) not vegetarian for religious reasons. Guest guest
I get vegan vitamins, but sometimes it is really hard to tell what is in them, even if there is no gelatin. the bottle usually only lists whether it is free of common food allergens, but says nothing about animal byproducts. The only multi-vitamin brand at my stores that I know is labeled veggie friendly is " Solgar " . Is there another way to tell? , " Sheryl " <ssarndt> wrote: > > They do make vitamins that are veggie-friendly!! I buy the veggie- > capsules all the time if I buy vitamins! I also look for the ones labelled " veggie friendly " or I look for tablets instead of capsules. I think another way to get around this is to simply empty the capsules before you eat the contents.
