Guest guest
Yeah, some people just cannot understand that we [most of us anyway] aren't out to convert others to be like us. I mean, I am not saying it wouldn't be great if everyone went veggie and the planet was healed faster from all the damage brought about by modern factory farming practices due to the demand for inexpensive meat items in large quntities. But on the same token I am hardly one to stand upon a soap box yelling at the world that they better change and be like me or else. I much prefer to be the change I want to see in the world and hope that others will eventually come around to vegetarianism on their own. I think just showing people that it tastes great and isn't a big deprivation diet goes a long way towards this end.; smiles and friendliness help too. Nothing worse in my mind than bitter, cranky vegetarians on a mission. ~ feral ~ Nothing is greater, nothing is of more importance, than to find amid the errors and darkness of this life, a shining truth. ~ Robert Green Ingersoll ~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~~> , Sant & Brown <santbrown@l...> wrote: >One person said: 'Well, if you won't > explain why you're vegetarian, how on earth do you expect to make > converts? Guest guest
He got pissed because of the stereotype of vegetarians (and especially vegans)- preachy, self-righteous, and hostile towards anyone who doesn't have to anyone who doesn't have the exact same dietary / lifestyle choice. He wanted you to conform to this so he could go on thinking we are all members of a sadistic cult and he will turn into a creep if he goes a single day without meat. Perhaps he is an avid (rabid?) activist of some other " moral " position (i.e. pro-life, religion, etc.) and is looking for justification of his own preachiness. I will try to point out the flaws of meatheads arguments in an online forum, but most people who know me, even when I worked at a restaurant that served meat, probably don't even know I am a vegan. It would be pointless for me to walk up to strangers or classmates and tell them their furcoat caused the death of hundreds of sentient creatures or that their cheeseburger is clogging their colon with carcinogens. But, if someone asks why I don't eat meat I will tell them flat out. It has yet to get tiresome for me because I figure there is a chance they will learn something. On the rare occassion that I meet a meat-eater who claims to essentially agree that meat- eating is cruel, but just " can't give it up " or is under the absurd impression meat is necessary to live, I do not think it out of line to suggest various meat substitutes. > wrote: > >One person said: 'Well, if you won't > > explain why you're vegetarian, how on earth do you expect to make > > converts? Guest guest
Could be, Dave ;=) I do know he wanted an argument, and neither of us were willing to give him one on that subject. Actually, the fellow was sitting in a restaurant at the time, ordering fish/sealife of some kind (he has never eaten other kinds of animals in front of us, so probably thinks fish is 'safe' around vegetarians) and was having a rare old time baiting us (no pun, just metaphoric) that day. siggghh. The people one calls 'friends'! *lol* He is not a religious fanatic, nor is he ignorant, uneducated or unaware. He fancies himself as a philosopher having taken a couple of degrees thataway once (confusing a study of the discipline with the practice thereof, as often occurs). He did, however, in the course of a couple of hours or so, exceed the bounds of friendship. Ijjits ijjits ijjits! Thanks for the support ;=) Best, Pat > > He got pissed because of the stereotype of vegetarians (and > especially vegans)- preachy, self-righteous, and hostile towards > anyone who doesn't have to anyone who doesn't have the exact same > dietary / lifestyle choice.
