(don't buy their regular canned-- it has some stomach irritants) http://www.sitstay.com/store/edibles/food2.shtml - my cats eat a combination of this and some of the canned foods i've listed. wellness/felidae/innova/california natural -- all very good-quality foods. wellness doesn't usually include grains, although some of their newer formulae have rice. there's a petition circulating to keep them from putting rice in their cat foods. all of these foods have a lot of " extra " ingredients like fruits and veggies, which are not necessary for cats. if you MUST feed kibble, this is the ONLY one i recommend: http://www.performancepetfoods.com/product.asp?0=422 & 1=466 & 3=55 . i feed it to my cats on occasion with very good results. please supply your cat with a lot of fresh drinking water and/or pour some in the food when feeding kibble. cats need to get a lot of fluids from their food. if course, the best thing for your cats is to feed them a homemade diet, if you can stomach it (i can't). a good recipe can be found on the following website: www.catnutrition.org. some things to avoid when looking at pet food ingredient labels: by-products -- this usually means diseased animals, roadkill, or even euthanized animals. absolute poison. " meat " or similar word without a qualifier-- you need to know what animal the food is coming from. if they won't tell you, there's a problem. nitrates and other chemical preservatives meat " meal " -- this usually indicates that the meat is not fresh. cats should NOT be fed (a partial list): corn, cereal grains, tuna, a diet of mostly or only fish, milk, excess sugars, onions, or garlic. hope this helps!! melody http://www.melodysmusic.net
Guest guest
If anyone is interested in a quality nonvegan food for cats, I feed my pets natural balance (www.naturalbalanceinc.com). I went onto it for my dogs & cat after I found out how Iams tested dogfood in their laboratories. N.B. tests their foods but in real-world settings (shelters, homes, rescues, sanctuaries, etc.). That and it is made with a lot of quality ingredients and not a lot of fillers. I have friends who swear by it too. they do offer a vegetarian dogfood, mainly for dogs with special allergies to meat. That and cutely enough, Dick Van Patten founded the company, which I thought was interesting. Megan
Guest guest
Thanks, Megan;=) I'll bear that one in mind. Is it made by the buttery spread people? Same name. I haven't seen it here, but shall keep my eyes open - when they can import pet food across the border again. Sigggghhhhh. I know I always look for products that are not cruelty tested and catfoods that don't use rendered animal products but rather human quality - also human quality non-meat products in both dog and cat food too. After all, who wants the fillers and sweepings from the factory floor! ;=( Best, Pat > If anyone is interested in a quality nonvegan food for cats, I feed my pets natural > balance (www.naturalbalanceinc.com). Guest guest
well, the oats they say is for this: " Oatmeal An exceptional source of: carbohydrates, fiber, thiamin and vitamin E. Not widely used in pet food because of cost, it does not contain the allergy causing glutens found in other grains. " did see this on their website for the dogofood though. " No corn, soy, wheat, eggs, white rice, dairy, or sunflower oil. These items, suspect of causing allergic reactions such as hair loss, scratching, hives, tail biting, chewing feet, and ear infections, are not used. " as for the cat food, it doesn't have oatmeal (at least the kibble). it does say " brown rice " in the ingredients. brown rice is a higher-quality grain at least than white rice (which is just empty carbs IMHO). maybe that was the same reasoning as adding the oatmeal to the dogfood (kibble at least). Megan - i checked out the ingredients; not bad at all, although it still has rice and oats in it. sigh. it is really hard to find a good cat food that doesn't have unnecessary ingredients in it. here are some i recommend:
