" Lo and behold, what we did find is that without exception, a high

complex-carbohydrate, high-fiber, high vegetable-protein diet was

associated with low body-mass index (the standard measure of healthy

weight), " Van Horn said.

The more animal protein a person ate, the higher his or her weight, she

said. "

This article will go into my ever increasing file of information to

share with friends who hop on the low-carb bandwagon. Maybe in addition

to learning that eating more meat isn't going to help them lose weight,

they might even think about alternatives to a meat-centric diet. One

can always hope. :)

I don't think that defending vegetarianism with flawed standards such as the BMI

is either effective or healthy.

" Weighing less " does not equal " being healthier " . Someone in favor of

meat-eating could claim that people who weigh more do so because the nutrients

in meat contribute to greater bone density and more muscle mass, and they could

be correct.

I don't feel any need to defend vegetarianism at all, personally.

Increased meat consumption is being touted by increasing numbers of my

friends as a weight loss method. I don't believe that it's a healthy

way to lose weight (that being their goal, not mine). I choose to share

information that may give them a bigger picture than what Dr. Atkins

wrote in his book, not convert anyone to my way of thinking or defend my

personal choices.

It was an interesting (to me) article that I thought others might enjoy

as well, not a marketing tool for PETA et al.

Hey Sherri.......thanks so much for sharing the article with us but the link

address (for me, maybe I am doing something wrong) comes up with a CNN can't

find message. Can you send the address again?

I had the same problem - the 'html' part got cut off in the link - just

type it in and it should get you there. Worked for me.

Or even more likely: meat-eaters weigh more than vegetarians because

of the pounds of rotting flesh inevitably stuck in their colon.
