Guest guest
i grow some of my own veggies and herbs and i definitely think they taste better than commercially grown. freshness is one issue....i can pick what i want just minutes before preparing and eating it. also, the veggies can be picked at their peak. for instance, tomatoes that ripened on the vine taste so much better than tomatoes that ripen in storage and on route to the grocery store. i've seen that lisa and dweezil show a couple of times and noticed that she claims to be vegetarian (i hadn't noticed that they changed the wording in the intro). every show i've seen had her sneaking some meat. in one episode she was scarfing down some beef stroganoff like there was no tomorrow. lol. hey, send some of those thai chiles my way! yum! susie --- matrixenos <matrixenos wrote: > Well, I was wondering if anyone grows their own > veggies, fruits, > herbs, etc. It seems like growing them oneself can > produce a tastier food and perhaps be a bit of fun in the process. Yes yes, that's right.. Bananas are shipped green and I believe much of the products are shipped extra cold to slow down the maturing process..? I just recently bought (wish I grew) a lil bag of cherry tamaters still on its vine and they tasted soooo good. > > i've seen that lisa and dweezil show a couple of times > and noticed that she claims to be vegetarian (i hadn't > noticed that they changed the wording in the intro). > every show i've seen had her sneaking some meat. in > one episode she was scarfing down some beef stroganoff > like there was no tomorrow. lol. LOL...yes, she is sneaking some form of meat in every episode. The one particular epi. in which I first noticed the change in the intro. (I believe the one with the guitar string co. owner guy and his Atkins cookout), the show (and her) seemed to go out of its way to point out that she didn't like to eat or deal with (prepare) meat altogether...haven't really seen that in any of the others before or since that epi. She can still churn out the great music though!! > > hey, send some of those thai chiles my way! yum! > > susie Like I said you can have some of them red ones...whooooeieeie, yum. Anywho, I've got to find out how to take the peppers off (cut or pull etc.), and even though I cheated and bought the plant as opposed to growing from scratch/seed, I found it neat to pick and eat! Guest guest
Unfortunately, I don't have a big enough yard to grow my own veggies:( I have always wanted to have a garden but I got to get a bigger yard first I think. Of course, I could try to grow a little something anyway and see how it turns out. I suppose I don't necessarily have to grow a huge garden. Guest guest
hi noel, you don't have to have a big yard in order to grow vegetables. i don't have a suitable yard (it's sloped, rocky, and gets no sunlight) for a garden. i grow vegetables and herbs in containers and mixed in with flowers and perennials in the flowerbed in front of the house. you'd be surprised how much you can grow in a little space. good luck with your garden, susie --- Noel <justice1stright73usa wrote: > Unfortunately, I don't have a big enough yard to > grow my own veggies:( I have always wanted to have a > garden but I got to get a bigger yard first I think. > Of course, I could try to grow a little something > anyway and see how it turns out. Guest guest
Hi! Have you ever tried earth boxes? My husband has grown tomatoes, peppers and herbs in them right on our deck. We also have a garden and a green house. But these make it convenient to just walk out on the deck and snip the herbs you want fresh! Its a good size too, the herbs really get big. Perhaps give them a try. I believe they have a web site. I can't wait for tomatoes! We canned a huge amount last year and we are down to our last jar . Not to mention eating them fresh. I am counting the days tee hee Thanks!!! Becky www.pkdcure.org * *trying to find a cure polycystic kidney and liver disease* HAPPY SPRING!!! Guest guest
We do grow our own organic veggies and herbs. We use the herbs for food and medicinal reasons, and even use basil to repel flies. And, yes, the veggies we grow are not only healthier, but much tastier! We do a lot of companion planting and composting, too. That makes a big difference in yield if you grow organically. Guest guest
Right now I'm in an apartment, but I spent many years growing my own veggies and I'll return to it this summer in the new house We grow our vegetables without artificial fertilizers; the only fertilizers we use are compost, fish emulsion, and manure. I like home-grown vegetables way better than commercial! They are much tastier than store-bought, in part because they are fresher. If you decide to grow your own, it will benefit you to look for heirloom varieties and plant those. Not only are they in danger of disappearing, but they are much more flavorful and have great variety. The produce sold in grocery stores is selected and bred for shelf life, not for taste. They plant the varieties taht they do so that the resulting produce will travel well and look good on shelves days, sometimes weeks, after being harvested. Because of the power of agribusiness, these varieties are also the ones that you often see sold, as seed, to small growers too. I really encourage you to seek out heirloom varieites whenever possible- you will really appreciate the tastes! Also, if you are growing your own, you might want to find a neighbor and work out some barter. For instance, a friend of mine is growing tomatoes this year, and in my area, people who grow tomatoes always have more than they need. So, I'm not going to grow tomatoes; she'll just give me her extra in exchange for some of my extra produce. I also hope to have my own hive next year, and harvest honey from it. Honey makes great barter material. On the downside, an unfortunate side effect of growing vegetables deep in the city is that the pollution from cars often diminishes the taste & possibly nutrition of the produce. I think that the freshness probably makes up for it, though. matrixenos <matrixenos wrote: Well, I was wondering if anyone grows their own veggies, fruits, herbs, etc. It seems like growing them oneself can produce a tastier food and perhaps be a bit of fun in the process. I don't have a garden now, and likely won't for the foreseeable future. But, I grew up on 5 acres, and we had an acre of garden. There was NOTHING fun about tending to it! It was backbreaking work, and I hated it. I did enjoy the fresh veggies, but dealing with the " excess " (canning, blanching and freezing, pickling, etc) was also a chore. When I bought my first house my father came over and put in a garden for me - tilled the ground, put down some topsoil, and planted a variety of things that I enjoy. He also came over weekly to weed it, because he knew how much I hated doing that. It was wonderful to be able to go out and pick whatever I wanted for dinner fresh, and things definitely tasted better. For now, I appreciate the farmer's markets we have around here. I get " fresh " produce without all the hassles and work. I'll likely have a small vegetable garden again one day though, because there's really nothing like picking things minutes before you prepare them. -- Sherri If you're arguing with an idiot make sure he isn't doing the same thing. Trust me, I've had my fair share of " backbreaking work " , lol. The only difference is there was far MORE than 5 acres. I've tended to many fields of corn, soybeans, etc. Row by row by row by row...with gloves and hoe, we go! Which way do I NOT want to look....forward, to the rest of long row or to the side at the remaining rows of the long arse field, lol. I did enjoy the fresh veggies, but dealing with the " excess " > (canning, blanching and freezing, pickling, etc) was also a chore. I've helped can before as well (ok, I just cut and sliced), but I'd like to try and get into these days. I don't mind the effort on either account...it's something I would enjoy, especially if I am successful and my belly is rewarded. > > For now, I appreciate the farmer's markets we have around here.
