Rad's post brought this one to mind:

How many here eat steamed veggies?

Which ones do you prefer prepared that way, and

how do you typically serve them?

Do you serve them with rice or pasta, or just on

their own?

What sort of seasonings do you add after they are

cooked?

Just share your steamed veggie tips and advice ~

with our diverse membership we are all sure to learn

a new tip or idea to try... maybe two. :)

make mine stir fried with lots of seasonings. I can only handle

broccoli raw and with a dip. who knows maybe someone will put up a

recipe that I'll try. I never aquired the taste for squash either but

I can handle a little thrown in something as long as it dont stand

I'm going to be making a stir fry (made one a couple of weeks ago as

well). I first saute up some onion and garlic...then add a bit of

water (be careful of temp when adding water to the bit of oil) to

create a small amount of a bath, add in raw veggies, put a lid on and

sorta steam them for a bit, leaving them crunchy. Then add in some

hoisen sauce and stir fry sauce and keep folding over... Your still

getting that steam type of cook but with a nice coating of flavor...

stir-steam?? good stuff...add it over thin noodles or rice.

Don't know if this counts as steaming or not, but my favorite way to

fix fresh asparagus is to fry it in grapeseed oil and a few shakes of

veg-all seasoning until browned, then add a little water and continue

frying until most of the water has evaporated and the asparagus is

tender.

My last batch consisted of broc, baby carrots, onion, bean sprouts,

bell pepper, snow peas, 1 or 2 jalapenos, garlic, fresh Thai basil,

fresh mint and some peanuts.

The coating was hoisen sauce, soy sauce, a sweet chili Asian sauce and

ground pepper (i think onion powder as well).

I actually wanted it to have some sweetness with only a bit of heat

this time...usually I go for the heat. While the nice thick coating

of flavor was infusing into the veggies in the hot pan, I threw in

some " cooked " rice vermicelli and stirred. It turned out excellent! S.

I love steamed broccoli and cauliflower. I usually serve them as

their own side dish and I add a bit of crushed salt and lots of fresh

ground pepper. I time the steaming by looking. Once the broccoli is

bright green, it is done. The cauliflower turns whiter. You can also

use a small fork if the pieces are big enough; which mine are.

Great topic!

I don't steam many veggies anymore, since my steamer went kaput. I still steam

artichokes, but I've found that I prefer my asparagus baked, sauteed, or

grilled.

I do steam brown rice.

I nuke or sautee frozen broccoli or carrots- when nuking them, it's the steam

that largely cooks them, but it takes much less time and there's no broccoli

stink in the house.

That is a great idea for the broccoli " stink " ; thanks!

Now that I am selling my house I really appreciate

ideas for ways to keep my cooking from becoming

bad lingering odors. :)
