Guest guest
I think he did not die from obesity but it was stated that at the time of death he was in terrible health and over weight (obese). At least from what I heard on some report on TV about him. Robin in NC
Guest guest
Hmm, I thought that he fell by the pool. It was indeed a fall, though. I missed the post wherein someone stated that he died of obesity, but that poster was incorrect. periople <periople wrote:If memory serves, the doctor died from complications rising from head trauma caused from a fall on ice while walking to work. Not from obesity as someone had posted earlier. Your mileage may vary. Of course I could be wrong. Heather
Guest guest
Here's my take on it: we can never really know everything about this man's medical condition. However, if we look at his medical records " terrible health " is an exaggeration. He had a heart condition that was supposedly caused by a long-ago viral infection. We can't know if that was true, but even if it wasn't, a heart condition does not equal " terrible health. " Secondly, let's look at the weight issue: unless we look at the medical records, we don't know the truth of them either. I looked at The Smoking Gun but didn't find his complete records, but I did find some info: at the time of his death, he weighed 258 pounds. This would be considered obese (and btw, " obese " does not mean " overweight. " One can be overweight without being obese.) However, his personal physical and the hospital where he died say that he retained fluid during his coma, causing him to balloon up to that weight (this is very possible and happens frequently to comatose or otherwise very ill patients.) Here's a quote from Snopes.com: " Thanks to his death certificate (as displayed at The Smoking Gun), we know Atkins was 258 pounds at the time of his death. Yet according to a copy of his medical records, as turned over to USA Today by the diet guru's widow, Atkins weighed 195 pounds upon admission to the hospital 8 April 2003 following his fall. He died on 17 April 2003 after having been in a coma for more than a week. Although the BMI might disagree, I think that 195 is a pretty healthy weight for a 6-feet tall guy with a large frame (I don't know what sort of frame Atkins had.) Plenty of my clinical clients were tall and weighed about that much, and were in very good shape. - priscilla rwhitt1212 wrote: I think he did not die from obesity but it was stated that at the time of death he was in terrible health and over weight (obese). Guest guest
Well, that was very enlightening Pricilla:) Thanks for posting this information. I read that Atkins did die from obesity but of course the media does have a tendency to blow things out of proportion. Guest guest
You're welcome. While I think that a)the Atkins diet is really unhealthy and b)Dr. Atkins was a bald-faced liar (I have read his book, because my partner went on that diet for several weeks, and it's full of misinformation, which I cannot assume is accidental since he WAS a doctor) I still think it's important to look at facts before speculation. Now, it's entirely possible, imo, that a cardiac event prompted his fall- we may never know. He had a long-standing heart condition. Dying from obesity alone, though, is really hard to do- you have to get really, really, really fat. I'm talking several hundred pounds. Obesity does contribute to lots of other health problems, and that's why it's being targeted right now as a problem.
