Can anyone recommend some non-soy milk substitutes that actually taste good?

I'm not going back to soy milk, because frankly the changes in my body since I

gave it up are amazing. I used to drink Odwalla Milk, but it wasn't popular so

they stopped producing it. (It was so yummy! A blend of soy, oat, and rice

milks.)

I'm specifically looking for a milk that's good to drink. I like to DRINK milk,

not just use it IN things. Has anyone here ever tried rice or oat milks? What

can you tell me about them?

I think I have a line on raw goat's milk near my city, but until I can try it

and see how it tastes I need to stop drinking this pasteurized stuff.

thanks,

Priscilla

Dear Priscilla, You might try Rice Dream until you start on raw goat's milk. I

use only raw goat's milk, yogurt and cheese and feel like a different person.

YAY another raw enthusiast!

Ok, since you're a raw goat's milk drinker, I must ask you: how much like cow's

milk does it taste? I tried cooked goat's milk from the grocery, and it tasted

sort of gamy, sort of salty. I love the taste of cow milk. Two people on my

local raw milk list told me that raw goat milk doesn't have that gaminess, and

that it actually tastes like cow milk, except with a sweeter aftertaste.

So tell me, what does it taste like to you?

I gave up dairy for three years, drinking only soy stuff once OdwallaMilk was

discontinued, and I think that in that time I became somewhat lactose

intolerant- that will happen when you give up milk for that long. I have IBS

and the cooked cow milk is aggravating it.

Once I can get my own raw milk I plan to make my own yoghurt, and maybe cheeses

when I get the hang of it. In the meantime, I'll pick up some Rice Dream.

thanks!

Dear Priscilla, The raw goat milk is so good and smooth. I love it. I didn't

have to acquire a taste for it and after getting the small pocket book by

Bernard Jensen, Ph.D. (Goat Milk Magic one of life's greatest healing foods) and

seeing what nutrition it has I am grateful that I was able to find someone

nearby to be able to get it fresh.

Have a nice weekend...Thecla

You'll see almond milk in the stores (Pacifica for example makes one).

A little pricier, but certainly good. In addition to the Rice Dream

people mention (I always found it a little thin, kind of like 2%),

have also seen oat versions too.

I also love the Rice Dream. We got the vanilla kind. It's better

for drinking plain, but we still use the soy milk in cereal and in

cooking. It's nice and thick for using in recipes. But, I only

liked the chocolate kind for drinking. The regular soy milk wasn't

so great for that. I agree that the rice milk is a bit thin,

though. Haven't tried almond milk yet. How is it different? Does

it taste at all of almonds?

Haven't had almond for a while; it was very good, maybe a little more

natural sweet feel to it. But for drinking, some soys are very good

(and you're right about the chocolate); vanilla silk, available in

triple-packs of 2-quarters for $6-7 at Costco, is decent stuff.

Ditto regarding your site, read it some months back, good story.

I really like 8th continent soy, especially the chocolate. It's yummy!

I have a problem with rice milk because of the way it looks when I pour it

over cereal --- the translucent consistency really bothers me. Yes, I'm

rather neurotic.
