Guest guest
They're highly processed so I view them as an occasional treat rather than a staple. Guest guest
Paul, I guess it would depend on what the ingredients are, but in general tofu dogs seem like a highly processed food item, which should probably be avoided. In our family, it is not like we never use stuff like that, but we try to use it very sparingly. If the ingredients list " soy protein isolate " I would avoid them for sure. I have nothing against soy per se (in fact I spend a lot of time and energy defending soybeans and soy products), but soy protein isolate has been shown to raise IGF-1 (insulin-like growth factor 1) even more so than cow's milk (not good) so many experts, vegetarian educators included, are recommending avoiding this fragmented food product. So a big YES to whole and lightly processed soy foods like edamame, tofu, soymilk, tempeh, a big NO to soy protein isolate. You can watch a segment of a talk Dr. McDougall gave on this very subject at the Healthy Lifestyle Expo here: http://www.vegsource.com/articles2/mcdougall_igf1.htm Hope this is helpful, Karen
Guest guest
We don't eat them often, but we do bring them camping when we go in the Spring. We had used them a bit more regularly - ie when we knew we'd have super busy days - alternating with vegan burgers. I think they are ok if used sparingly or wisely. We tend to use them more in summer when we grill outside more often and also we take the vegi dogs along when we go camping. It's more of a 'treat' than a standard, though we do have vegi burgers more often in general (maybe 1x every 2 weeks I guess) Missie On 3/4/07, Paul Falvo <pfalvo wrote: > > How do the moms and dads out there feel about tofu dogs as a toddler > snack? > > Everything that glitters is not gold -- and everything vegan is not > necessarily healthy. > > Wondering how you feel about this sort of " meat substitute. Guest guest
Paul, I think there's a time and a place for everything. We occasionally have some of the fake-meat things like tofu dogs or " veggie slices " (as we call them). I think especially when friends come over, it's nice to have some options that don't seem completely foreign to them. I particularly like to keep what we call " crumbles " (soy-based " ground meat " substitute) in the freezer so that I can whip up conventional comfort food when non-veg-friendly omnivore guests come over. Shepherd's pie, sloppy joes, etc. But yes, they have a lot of sodium in them, and they're processed food. You don't want to base your family's diet on them. Guest guest
well, we usually have tofu dogs on whole grain rolls with veggie baked beans and broccolli once every two weeks or so as a " junk " dinner. I wouldn't consider it a healthy snack per se, but it's not that bad in moderation! other then that, I don't think we buy/eat meat subs much at all... except for the " chicky " nuggets I make from okara at home! - Paul Falvo<pfalvo < > Sunday, March 04, 2007 1:13 PM tofu dogs How do the moms and dads out there feel about tofu dogs as a toddler snack? Guest guest
Okara, not okra. It's basically the stuff left over from making your own soymilk (what's left of the soybeans/pulp). It's supposed to be really good, but I've made soymilk with soybeans exactly once - on the stovetop. I have made 'lazy' soymilk from tofu (basically you blend it with water till it becomes soymilk again - in a pinch it works). Guest guest
In following this conversation, I decided ro reread the package on the tofurky veggie slices that I had (which are my FAVORITE brand of veggie slice) and was surprised to discover that they do not contain any soy protein isolate, maybe that's why they are so much better (and more expensive) than they other brands. They are still high in sodium though. , " k.beauford " <karen wrote: > > Paul, > > I guess it would depend on what the ingredients are, but in general tofu dogs seem like a > highly processed food item, which should probably be avoided. Guest guest
Have you tried the Italian saisage by Tofurkey or the brats by Yves? I love the brats with mashed pootatoes and sauerkraut. I toss the Italian sausage into my spaghetti sauce or eat on a bun with sauce. Donna , " Audrey Snyder " <AudeeBird wrote: > > Boca doesn't make it anymore! Guest guest
No, but I do like Boca's italian sausage and brats. I've heard the Yves stuff is pretty good, but I can only find a little of it at Whole Foods (the only close health food store). There is another health food store I've been wanting to try, about 30 minutes away. I'll have to look closer at the Tofurkey products. I like all of the Quorn products I've tried, mostly the fake chicken. I have tried the Yves pepperoni and like it. I put it in macaroni with mozzarella and pizza sauce -- pizza casserole! I make fake turkey reubens with the Smart fake turkey, it's wonderful.
