Good cheap groceries, part one

And don't forget to check out your local salvage stores, and Big Lots or

Odd Lots stores if you have 'em. Especially salvage; some salvage stores

are better than others, but the good ones, ie., the ons that really

sell salvage and not just slightly -cut-rate standard groceries, can be

a goldmine of good cheap food, and sometimes also stuff \lke soap, toilet

paper and aspirin.

What they feature is three things:

1. Stuff that didn't sell--overstocks, or holiday food that didn't sell

by the

holiday, or good but unusual,. " ethnic " or oldfashioned foods that people

aren't sure what to do with--you prob'ly have to be over 50 to know how

good canned figs are on cereal, or Jewish /from a Jewish neighborhood

to know how to make _matzo brei_out of leftover matzos

2. Stuff that got cosmetically damaged in transit (a bottle somewhere in a

lot got broken and drizzled fruit juice over the labels of bottles

below it in

the stack, for instance), or torn stuff (boxes/bags of beans or pasta that

broke enough to lose a few but could still be taped together) , or dented

cans. And, yes, it was true in the '40s and '50s that dented cans weren't

safe, but it hasn't been true for a long time.. Just make sure the lids

aren't bulging and that the top doesn't " give " more than normal when

you press it

3. Frozen stuff. A lot of retailers will freeze refrigerated stuff

that's nearing

its sell-by date, and sell it wholesale to salvage folks. Also some

refrigerated but long-keeping stuff like cheese that's near or a day or two

over its sell-by date; just use normal prudence here, and remember there's

nothing wrong with the sniff test. :) And often there's dry stuff

like beans

or rice that's a little over its date but still perfectly fine.

The stores are bare-bones to the max, but you can save a fortune at the

good

ones. Beans for 33 cents a pound, 5 pounds of flour or cornmeal for

69 cents,

cheese for $1.50 a pound, jars of herbs/spices or boxes of Celestial

Seasonings

teas at 4 for $1, soft drinks at 10 cents a can, and canned goods for

a quarter

are still pretty common, though they fluctuate with the market and your

location

like everything else.

More about eating cheap in another post.

I haven't heard them called that, but I think Big Lots has salvage groceries

a lot of times. Is that what Aldi is like, too? (have Aldi close to me but

never go -- I should!)

We love Aldi! It They are the folks that own Trader Joe's and have many TJ items
