Malto-O-Meal Deluxe - need breakfast ideas for kids

When I was a kid, Malt-o-Meal was my favorite, and this is how I make it now:

Malt-o-Meal Deluxe:

2 cups water

1/4 tsp sea salt

2/3 cup malt-o-meal, dry

2 T ground flax seeds

2 T wheat germ

Make malt-o-meal as directed on box, then when it's done, stir in the flax meal

and wheat germ and top with natural sweetener and milk or cream of choice.

Makes 2 generous servings complete with your Omega-3's for the day, and the kids

won't even know the goodies are in there.  Can also stir those into oatmeal or

any other favorite hot cereal to add Omega-3's, B-vitamins, minerals, protein,

and fiber.  Add cocoa powder to make it chocolate and add a few antioxidants.

May I ask what Mal-o-meal is? The only thing I know of is the cereal

company who makes knock offs of all the sugar types like fruit loops and

such.

Same company, but they started with a wheat farina and malted barley hot cereal

just called Malt-o-Meal.  It's vitamin and mineral-enriched but has no

artificial colors, flavors, preservatives or anything.  The box is red and

yellow.  I'm in the US in Oregon, and it's in any store in the hot cereal

section.  Hope that helps!

Huh - I've never seen it. I usually just eat oatmeal or cream of wheat.

Thanks for sharing with me!

You're very welcome.  I hope you can find it and give it a try.  I always found

it much tastier than cream of wheat.  :-)   But I always make it thicker than

the box directions.

Wasn't there Maypo too? I remember Malto Meal but I never see it

anymore. I sure don't like cream of rice, it's so gooey.

Yeah, I used to eat Maypo, too!  My mom was (probably still is) a huge hot

cereal breakfast fan.  I don't really like the taste of maple syrup, so I didn't

really like Maypo, but chocolate Malt-o-Meal was (is, but I make my own now to

avoid artificial colorings) my absolute fave.  :-)  I just make sure to add

additional protein somehow, because I am sugar-sensitive and feel MUCH better if

I have at least 20 grams of protein every meal, especially breakfast.  I've also

tried stirring in a good, mild protein powder for that.  (Hemp protein is

great...tastes nutty and adds a ton of fiber.)  Or you could use a tasty

powdered milk, although I haven't found one I like the taste of yet.  Also, I

love my cereal thick, and I thought I'd mention that putting in the flax meal

makes the hot cereal less sticky because of those wonderful 'good' Omega-3

fats.  :-)

You could even serve the Malt-o-Meal with a handful of organic semi-sweet

chocolate (or carob) chips for the kids to mix in.  THAT would have them excited

for breakfast.  ;-)
