A ball-python.... cool. My doctor has one and she says the python lays

his head on her shoulder. She says petting the snake is like stroking

soft leather. I want one now! Wahhh. Oh well. I have a small zoo

already. Oh, I can related to the mental health stuff. I have major

depressive disorder and a few subclinical bipolar symptoms. :-)

  • 2 years later...

My name is Linda and I live in Salem, Oregon. I am a grandma of 7. I stay

at home grandma/mom to my 16 year old grandson who has been with me for

almost 10 years.

My only concern with going straight vegetarian is keeping fresh veggies at

all times. I do not have a current garden but my family will be coming over

and we all will put in a good size garden. I will be planting peach,

nectarine, lemon and apricot trees this spring. I will buy the largest size

I can get so hopefully will have all the fruit we can handle; plus some. I

also have numerous of each of green and purple seedless grapes. Now....after

its in the ground, grown and ready to ..........I must learn how to can! Not

a clue how to can anything.....And I am 59 years old!

We just had freak weather here so I had the kids bring all my grape vines

into a room which I kept at about 40-50 degrees. There was so much snow and

ice, I actually lost many branches off my trees.

Anyway, I will be reading past posts and see your files and recipes and hope

to learn a lot here. I am also trying to get my home to be self-sustaining

in case of any national emergency. Water is my only big concern but I am

reading a lot on survival sites.

Hope you all had memorial holidays!!

Linda,

Welcome to the group! Don't feel bad about using frozen and canned produce.

Where I live it's hard to get good quality fresh produce year round, and my

tree-covered yard with clay soil hasn't been too good for gardening yet.

Fresh is definitely better though, so if you can get some things canned that

will be great! Do you have any farms near you which sell produce, or even a

CSA you can get produce from? That would help until you get the garden

established.

What a great idea. Yes, farms sell fresh produce here. I'm sure I will get

all my veggies grown but the grapes need time to establish and fruit trees,

also. I have had this place 20 years. You would think I would have already

done this. I lost my son and husband within 14 months of each other. After

that, everything went to hell. I was doing good just to get the lawn mowed.

A couple of years ago a new neighbor got me interested again in flowers. So,

I have gone plant crazy though most I am doing in containers due to a low

back problem. I realized how much I enjoyed gardening; it was so soothing

for my soul.

What is CSA? Your yard and soil fits mine perfectly. I am going to take out

2 small trees for my garden area. The snow and ice took a couple of very big

branches off my weeping willow which now leaves my patio plants in all day

sun! Our soil is also clay. I have to add to it each time I plant. For $30

an hour I am having a guy come in with a large tiller and till up all of my

area that I want to use. I think he can do what I need in a couple of hours.

I have a rotortiller but I cannot work it. Guess I will just resell it.

What state are you in? I am in Oregon. Thanks for the nice inviting email. I

hope to learn much from this site. Have you been on it long?

I must get my chores done so I can finish painting the livingroom. Have a

super week!

Linda,

CSA is " community supported agriculture. " Some cities have them, some don't.

You basically sign up to pay by the week/month, etc. and they put together a

box or basket of produce for you from what they have seasonally. This keeps

income coming in for them, and you have a guaranteed box of local fresh

produce that you usually pick up on a certain day. We have one here, but I

had problems with them, so quit in the summer.

I've been on this group for several months. It's a great group and you

should learn a lot here.

I live in central Virginia, about an hour from the mountains. My yard is

also covered in rocks. The clay is bad enough! Hopefully I can do better

this year now that I know a little more about what works and what doesn't.
