Guest guest
I've found eating healthy vegetarian to be rather expensive. I spend about $100/week on just me! And I prepare all my own food (no prepackaged frozen dinners, etc.). Produce can be quite costly, as can organic beans and frozen berries. Throw in a bottle of pomegranate juice, a tub of yogurt, organic milk, and so on, and it adds up real fast! -Erin
Guest guest
Erin, My weekly food bill is less than half of the cost of what you mention, and I include bottled water and fresh organic vegatables and fruits from the health food store and local market. I have one main dish cooked from scratch daily and at least one fresh organic green salad. I snack on dried fruits daily (prunes, apricots and dates). I drink fruit and vegetable juice daily. I eat a serving of soy cheese daily, and maybe 3 times a week have a veggie burger. Perhaps it is buying in bulk that makes the diffence. I do watch for sales and adjust my buying . Example is last week the supermarket had a large pkg.of organic Romaine lettcue for less than $2. I had to eat the heck out of that lettuce before it wilted. I even had salad for breakfast a couple times but the lettuce was wonderful. My only real expense is nuts which I eat sparingly. Just a handful every other day or so when I feel like I need the extra protein. I make my own teas, salad dressings, etc.so maybe that also saves money. Not enough time in the day to eat all the food that I would like to. Guest guest
I think it's the same as with being a meat eater, it all depends upon what you are eating. A meat eater or a vegetarian can eat cheaply, or go all out. Some weeks when I can afford it I go to whole foods and go all out, just like a meat eater can by buying more expensive meat. When I was a meat eater I could spend 10 bucks on the meat for one dinner, or I could spend 3 bucks. It's the same now. When I can't afford it I buy less expensive things. A head of cabbage will last for three meals, and a bag of whole grain pasta will be two meals. I can center the meal around the bread, and find some deals on some broccoli too. IT just all depends upon how much I spend, not if I am a veg or not. IF I avoid the Morningstar stuff on a week when I don't have a lot of food money that helps too.
