Guest guest
In about a month I will be having a tea party potluck (it will be a white glove and hat required event). I was hoping you guys had some authentic(ish) tea party recipes or ideas to share. So far I have cucumber and vegan cream cheese finger sandwiches, lavender lemonade (which was recommended by Donna), cookies... and of course, tea. Vegan is preferred but not necessary. Thanks, Jasmine
Guest guest
Ahhh, the quintessential tea cake is the Victorian Sponge Cake, which I do believe is in the files. It's pretty much two layers of yellow cake with seedless raspberry jam and whipped cream in between. Powdered sugar is sprinkled on top just before serving. It's light and refreshing. Another type of finger sandwich would be butter and watercress, which can easily be made vegan. What type of teas will you be serving? My favorite English brand is PG Tips. Sounds like a splendid event. Denise , " theredclock " <theredclock wrote: > > In about a month I will be having a tea party potluck (it will be a > white glove and hat required event). Guest guest
i ran across this recipe earlier today and thought they would be nice for a tea party. swiss sandwiches cut rye or pumpernickel bread diagonally in halves or quarters. spread with butter; top with thinly sliced radishes. sprinkle with salt. --- theredclock <theredclock wrote: > In about a month I will be having a tea party > potluck (it will be a > white glove and hat required event). Guest guest
Sounds like my Red Hat group! I often use recipes from this site for teas: http://whatscookingamerica.net/Menu/HighTea.htm She has menus as well as lots of recipes. You easily can substitute for the dairy products to make the scones vegan, but I have no CLUE how to make a vegan Lemon Curd, and there's no such thing as vegan Devonshire Cream (IMNSHO!). So you'd have to leave those off. But you could always use lemon and orange marmalade, and raspberry jam for the tangy tastes. Here's a recipe for Tofu " Egg " Salad that makes wonderful sandwiches: Mock (Tofu) Egg Salad http://veggietable.allinfo-about.com/recipes/mockeggsalad.html Yield enough for 4 sandwiches Time 40 minutes Ingredients: 1/2 c tofu mayonnaise (I like Nasoya Nayonnaise, but DH likes Hain's better) several T red or green onion, finely minced 1 stalk celery, finely minced 2 T fresh parsley, minced 1-2 T Dijon mustard dash salt and pepper pinch curry powder or turmeric (for color) 1 pound tofu (extra firm silken works best) Directions Combine everything but tofu. Crumble the tofu over the mayonnaise mixture and stir until blended. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes and serve. " finely minced " really means **finely** minced. I slice it up really, really tiny - disperses better and gives good flavor but less crunch. Hope this helps. Having an afternoon or evening tea is so much fun! Cheerio! Guest guest
Seems like you have been given some wonderful ideas! If you do not find a scone recipe that you want to use, I do have a tried and true currant scone recipe that has always gone over well with the British members of my family. I think that one of the ingredients that always seems to be a hit in them is the nutmeg in the recipe. Anyways, if you need it just let me know. I gave an afternoon tea last springtime as a baby shower and it was a smashing success. I served various scones, sandwiches, and tea breads. As someone else also mentioned, I served a hummus dip and that was also a hit. The thing that I like about tea breads is that they can be made in advance and can be easily altered for special diets. I had a couple of elderly ladies in attendance that were diabetic and they especially liked the fact that they could safely induldge in the whole wheat cranberry orange tea bread. I also sent everyone home with a gift bag containing a mini loaf of one of the tea breads, a few scones, a a couple of bags of nice tea so that they could have their own personal little tea at home. I REALLY loved giving this shower, can you tell? I hope that yours goes beautifully. Stef ---

Guest guest
How about watercress sandwiches? Isn't that supposed to be traditional for rich ladies' tea parties? Put fresh crisp watercress between bread that has been lightly coated with soy margarine. (I use a non-GMO, no trans fats (non-hydrogenated) spread.) Cut the sandwiches in triangles to serve. You can cut off the crusts, maybe with a scalloped edge (eg. with a French fry cutter). Mini sandwich triangles with any veggie pate or tofu no-egg salad would be good, too. You could make multi-layered sandwiches, with different colored " egg salad " in the different layers (using mustard for yellow, paprika for red, parsley or some other compatible green herb for another layer). from Maida Citizens for Pets in Condos, http://www.petsincondos.org South Florida Vegetarian Events, http://www.soflavegevents.net
